Is this boiler replecement quote fair?

Hello Guys,

Finally completed last weekend and am in my new home :T
Lots of questions to ask you guys, but my first is this,
Gas man has quoted £1700 for a new Valiant boiler (top end £900 one- a quick search by my OH and he says this is about right - sorry I dont have model number), he has to replace existing gloworm system boiler, and take away hot water storage tank and cold water tank. He says its 2 days work, and the main gas pipe running into kitchen is suitable, so making it a fairly simple.

Im dubious simply because he plucked the figure out of his head, and said it was because he 'liked us' and anyone else will quote £2500, im thinking thats a gimic! will be getting other quotes too, but would appreciate your thoughts in the meantime.

  • Get 3 other quotes and compare the difference ! i cost building work for a living and £1700 all inclusive is a fair price .

    Too cheap for a Vaillant.

His £2500 is more near the mark.

So he is giving you an £800 discount because 'he likes you' !!!

    I agree with Gas4you - very cheap. I wouldn't do it for that. £2,500 - 2,700 is about right.
  • Get a quote from British Gas, and then estimate half to two-thirds of that would be a fair price.

£1700 sounds about right to me. Boiler about £1k and say £500 labour and £200 in bits.
    Sounds a good price.
I am fitting a full system next week and I have only charged £2050.

You know I'm quite sure you said you had problems justifying any daily take above £ 120. Sorry - I must have imagined it.

    Cheers

I will be getting other quotes of course, just not high on my list right now as current system whilst arcaic is working (famous last words eh!) his 'cos i like you' line actually got me quite suspicious, if his quote is fair, he doesn't need to try and butter us up. He also said get in anyone else and they will quote you £2.5k. I thought 1700 was cheap, so perhaps too cheap.... Thanks for the advice guys

Oh sorry I wasn't referring to that and wouldn't dream of enquiring. It was the earlier post where you said that a combi replacement labour cost was fair at £500. But I thought these only took two days. So that would be a £250 per day labour rate then?

    Cheers

OP, nowhere do you say that you actually want to replace a conventional boiler with a combi-is that what you want, or is it just that he has quoted what suits him?
Is a combi suitable for your property and hot water requirements?
