For personal reasons I have decided to leave sky, costs for one, poor choice of programmes for another and of course the news international thing.
I am told that despite not being in contract, and being paid up until 8th september I will have to give them 31 days notice and pay another month to them 2 weeks after my service will end.
I am told that it is my fault, and that if I do not pay the extra month that I will not use I will be passed to a debt collection agency and persued through the courts.
Is this right?

Yes. You pay for what you use, so you'll be paying for anything used in the 31 day notice period. You will still have access to all your packages for 31 days after the day you call and cancel, then you'll be cut off. The billing date will be after the 31 days notice is up.
The notice period is clearly stated in their T&C's.0 -
I would imagine there's a clause somewhere that although not "in contract" is covered under their terms of service. They're unlikely to take you to court for 1 month's worth of payments, however you need to ask yourself if you're ever likely to want their service again, and whether you're happy to have that "strike" on your credit record? Also, is it worth the grief simply not to pay on principle?0

You are still under contract just not the initial 12 months part.0

Always under contract, it's just after 12 months it becomes rolling.0
