Extreme Couponing - very MSE

I watched Extreme Couponing on Discovery Real Time last night. OMG - I so, wish we had that option in the UK. A lady spent $1100 on food, toiletries, etc and ended up paying just $9.01. In the States (where else) they have stores whereby you can use coupons that you cut out from papers to trade in for your food. Some stores offer double couponing which means that you can end up in the plus for having bought a product meaning the shop pays you to take it home.
A lot of the people then went on to give the food to food banks, helping people in financial difficulty to keep their head above water. The folk who did keep their bargains in their house, flipping eck, it was like having your own supermarket. I was envious of their stock pile.
Catch it if you can on Mondays. Very eye opening. Just imagine how much fun we could have with the coupons, I'm sure Martin and the gang at MSE Towers would approve.

I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.

Huh? Sorry, how does that work? Do they, for example, have two $1 off coupon's for a product that only costs $1.20, so the store then gives them the 80 cents difference??February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Having lived in the states for many years, I used to do this all the time. I had a huge file with all my coupons and sorted them before each shop. You had to really watch the sales for it to be most effective, but all the grocery store ads came out in the Wednesday paper, and the coupons were mostly in the Sunday paper. People at my work would bring in coupons they weren't using and we had a big basket that they all went in and you could drop in what you didn't need and take what coupons you did need.
When I was last living there, most stores in our area did double coupons off routinely, although you'd get sales where they'd have triple or even quadruple off.
We used a huge stash of coupons each Thanksgiving and Christmas to buy food with money donated by employees at my workplace to buy as much food for holiday food shelters and families as we could every year. It was unbelievable how much food we ended up with!!!
It was great for keeping the grocery bill down, but you really had to guard against buying something you might not need JUST because you had a coupon. :rotfl:MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -

It depends on the stores. For awhile they were giving cash back if your coupons doubled to more, but once people started really using them, the stores wised up and double (or tripled or quadrupled) up to purchase price only.MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0

Hi CurlyTop,
As your thread has now dropped down the Old Style board I've moved it over to the Grocery Shopping board to see if you can get more replies.
