Sadly it's not as simple as that :(. Yes you just plug the cable between the ethernet ports, but you have to mess around with TCP/IP settings, not a job for the faint hearted as it will probably mess up your internet connection - I wish I hadn't mentioned it.

It's much easier if both computers are connected via your internet router/home hub. If the old xp desktop is connected by Ethernet to the router and the laptop is connected by wireless that will do.

Can both your computers connect to the internet at the same time? If so try the links in post 12.

It's ok Dave, I wont take on a job I don't feel competent to do, I am glad you mentioned it as it's a bit more in the old knowledge box eh lol,I think I will go to the connect by router or sloooooooooooow usb ha ha, anyway, thanks to all who have replied :)

why don't we go for the straightforward solution.....

1)open old PC, take out drives
2)open new PC, permanently install drives in new PC for extra space.

If there isn;t room for both install 1, copy the data over via the internal BUS (MUCH faster than USB).... then swap and repeat :)

    Seconded.....

    WHY ???

There's textual and visual guides all over the internet that will provide the know-how on accomplishing this. There'll be video guides on YouTube. There'll be books on servicing/maintaining/building PCs in the shops, on Amazon and in your local library. People here will help you, as you can see above.

When someone presents you with a solution, and you don't know how to accomplish the solution at the moment ......don't you want to learn how?

Yes I do to be honest, just a bit scared of breaking something, I mean we are not playing with penny sweets are we.
I have no tools, or even basic knowledge of this, how will I know if I can fit the old drives into the new tower etc, seriously? and what is internal BUS?

You don't need to know what an internal bus is. Suffice to say if/when you fit the old drives into the new PC, you won't need any external devices to do so.

You avoid breaking things by doing background research before starting the task, and establishing what you need to do. Forgive me, but I'm not going to type out a step-by-step for you, but as I said - there's reams of information out there. Go google for a while, with search terms relating to installing extra IDE or SATA drives in spare drive bays in a desktop PC, try and pick up what's needed, and ask here again if there's points of detail that you can't get from the other websites.

And the only tool required is a screwdriver.
