TBH I don't just think it was the domestic market which led to the downfall of the banks and if you keep money in these institutions then you're asking for trouble ( myself included), you cannot put the blame on a particular person borrowing because the bank doesn't lend its own funds anyway.

That being said, OP is it necessary to leave the country? Maybe South America would be a better choice. Otherwise go bankrupt and get your life back on track? Just a suggestion.

I'm in a ruthless mood sorry.

  • Hi everyone...
Just one thing.. is it not possible to keep paying your debts until you get this holy visa permit and than stop paying and bye?
  • Would think you are just storing up troubles for your return, in that there will be CCJ's and maybe even bankruptcy?

But have you considered how this may affect your ability to get a bank account or credit in the States? Some may ask for a copy of your British credit record before they will offer any facilities?

But, since the topic is useful - no, you cannot leave your debt. It's not really an ethical thing to do, either.

Personally I have moved from the US to the UK and I do have some American debt still. All I did was keep my American checking (current) account and use xe.com to transfer money from the UK to US to pay some off each month. You can do something similar if you move anywhere I imagine.
  • running away from debt...generally a bad idea as one day you will probably look to move back to the UK and your credit history will be in tatters. You are going to struggle big time with that visa too.....

A working visa would only be provided on a limited period, then would need to be reapplied for, so even if you did get your first visa, you will always live with the fear that it couldn't be extended. Getting a working visa is far from an open door to immigrating for good. If your visa run out and you can't get it renewed, you will no choice but to come back and face it all again, except much worse.
