Customs - UK resident flying into Dublin - question about VAT

I'm a northern ireland resident and UK citizen and so obviously pay VAT.
If I bring in items from america while on holiday that I need to declare (over the vat free threshold)... do I have to pay Irish VAT - is there a way I can pay UK VAT rate as I'm a UK resident - I don't see the sense in paying Irish VAT if I'm a UK citizen ..
Tbh I'm pretty clueless about all this ... know the basics but think my question is a bit more complicated - any help would be appreciated...

Hi, if you are returning to Ireland from outside the EU, you will need to pay duty and VAT when you arrive an airport in the Irish Republic. Unfortunately it isn't possible to tell the customs officers that you will pay later once you get to Newry ... because they will think that you probably won't get round to it.
There has been another thread on here regarding people who fly into Amsterdam and then transfer onto an international flight to the UK. They are being asked to make a customs declaration at Schipol airport: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/34370490 -
