Hi,
I hope soneone can give me some advice - this may be a lengthy post though!
Today I received a CCJ notice through the door for £557. I had no idea what it was for. I contacted the court who informed me it was for arrears to South West Water on a property that I preiviously lived in with my ex. Briefly the situation is that I moved out of the property in August 2008, lived my parents for a couple of months and then in the December 2008 moved into my own place. It was a messy break up and as much as I thought I had sorted everything I had failed to notify SWW that I had moved out of the property even though I was paying for water in a new property. My ex never forwarded any of the letters he received addressed to me and hence I have not even thought that I would still be on the account!!
Having spoken to SWW they said I am still liable to pay it even though I havent lived there in 3 years! My ex has made a repayment arrangement with him but he is not entirely reliable to stick to this.
I went bankrupt in January due to debts linked to my ex that were out of control!
I am due to get married next year and I was so sure that my life was moving on in a positive direction. This has just devastated me!
Can anyone give me some advice of what I could do other than pay it myself (which is not an option as we are scraping by despite both working - I am only part time due to my young son)??
Jen

If you went bankrupt then just contact south west water and give them the details of your bankrupty. If you are now bankrupt then any previous debts should have been included. Even if they weren't officially included in list at the time, your bankruptcy still stands, so you don't owe them any money. That's the point of bankruptcy.

Are they holding your ex liable for some of the debt and you for some of it? I'm not precisely sure how that would work if you are now bankrupt, but either way they should stop contacting you anyway.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Paying for water in a newer property doesn't remove the possibility that you might have been liable for water payments at the original property though. SWW would not make any such connection, nor is it their job to.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thank you. I am going to call my case worker for my Bankruptcy today and get their advice. I am mostly cross because my ex did not forward the letters that were addressed to me that came through his letter box. It has been three years! I am wondering if this would make any difference - but I doubt it.

Leaving aside the bankruptcy aspect, once a valid bill has been produced it remains valid.
