Now I could be wrong but I thought I remembered reading on HUKD that CleverBox had promised that all their stock had gone then their phonelines were 'down' then as if by magic, they had TouchPads at an inflated price on eBay.

Did anybody else pre-order with Expansys?

I did and had £359.99 earmarked on my bank account for the pre-order on Tuesday. Despite several calls to Expansys the money still hasn't been released by them so that my bank can make it available to me. Apparently, if they don't take it within 10 working days then it will go back into my account. So effectively, although their website stated 'no monies will be taken', it could be the 9th of September before I get my money back!!

I am disgusted with Expansys and I'm sure that it's an unauthorised payment, but my bank aren't being much help.

Same company, they have secured more stock but apparently has cost them more to buy (so reduced profit margin as this is the price they sold them for earlier in the week?).

How has there been an unauthorised payment. You offered to pay xx amount so xx amount was reserved from your account upon doing so. Expansys have not taken the money perhaps as no stock. Think of your bank as the middleman if they dont take payment the offer to buy is withdrawn and the bank release the held funds.

Your bank probably is no help as you authorised the payment, surely you know how online ordering works?

Yes I know how online ordering works. I am not stupid. But this was a pre-order, and I also know that if a website says that "no money will be taken until we contact you and agree on a price", then no money should be taken!.

That's how it's an unauthorised payment.

Also, even though the order was cancelled on the 23rd by Expansys, they have not informed the bank. That's why the bank have not (and cannot) release the funds.
  • surely you know how online ordering works?

    Maybe you need updating :)

    EXPANSYS

    From the order page
If you place a pre-order for this product now, we will not ship the product or charge your credit card without confirming you still wish to proceed when stock arrives. There are no cancellation charges.

    From FAQ
Pre-ordering a product does not commit you to accepting the order; once the product is in stock, we will contact you to check that you still want it.

out of interest card transactions (offline/online) are in two phases, authorisation (which happens at time of purchase) and settlement (when the money is transferred)

it sound like they have "authorised" your payment, which basically puts a reserve on the money for a week or two (it varies from bank to bank) and then, when the goods are shipped, settlement takes place and money is transferred. if not settled after a while the reservation simply expires

if you go around hotels they'll often ask for your credit card at check-in where they will authorise (but not take) money in case you do a runner. if at checkout you pay by other means, or the amount is less than expected, after a while you can run into trouble because although there may be money in the bank, all the auths add up and they cant authorise any more and you card will be declined

annoying i know, but thats how card transactions work. its to help stop people taking you money and doing a runner, and so that your money is not debited before goods are shipped (some shops can auth/settle at same time if goods are dispatched within 24 hours)
