Student possesions insurance

  • I agree, you should check your own contents insurance. This may not apply if it's a shared room.

I used Endsleigh for a few years (till about 2007) as they allow you to insure your own possessions in a shared property, including halls.

After getting married (and still having to share a flat with a friend) I switched to insuring everyone's contents, as this worked out substantially cheaper than a single student policy. With a student policy, I was not insured against a theft/damage/etc caused by my flatmate or their guests, so covering them didn't change any issues of liability. This remains the case now that my wife and I are both students once again.

As a cautionary tale...when I was an undergrad (back in the mists of time) it was quite a common game to try to sneak things into/out-of friends rooms. A friend took this to a new level when he decided to steal the flag off the wall of the room next door. Being a decent climber and having no sense or mortality, he reasoned that the best way to get in was to get the guy out of his room (knock, knock: "Dave has pizza and beer downstairs...you want some? Yeah, I'll meet you down there."), go on to the roof, then abseil down and climb in the open window. He got the flag and made good his escape...only to discover the door had been unlocked the whole time.

The moral of the story is that a thief will go to extraordinary lengths to steal the most mundane of things, but often they won't have to. Remind your son to lock his door.

I have just organised student possessions insurance for my son. Interestingly, it is exactly the same insurance as cover4students offer, but if you go via morethan.com, click on 'more products' and then go to 'student insurance' the prices are different. I got £4k of possessions cover plus all-risks laptop and also vacation cover for £79.12, while cover4students would have been £94.24 for the same cover.

It seems to be a more comprehensive policy than Endsleigh offer, and has only a £10 excess, walk-in theft cover, new for old, and no lock requirements (good for a house-share where you don't know how careful the other students will be!)
  • Santander "free" gadet insurance for student accounts - sounds great -
HOWEVER, you don't get to hear about it until you try to register your computer, if it cost more than £600 when new, it will not be covered by this free policy. This is not mentioned anywhere on the promotional literature, it's buried in the Terrms and Conditions of the policy. In my view, they should be reported for mis-selling.

I have just opened a student account with Santander. It is in the initial paperwork that you have to read and sign before you go ahead with the account. It was explained to me by the advisor. I wouldn't say it was buried in the terms and conditions.

I'm sharing a house with coursemates this year. No 'normal' insurer will give you a normal home insurance policy whilst sharing a house like this. My original plan was to get standalone bike insurance, and use the Santander free insurance, thus covering only my most valuable items, because the prices Endsleigh etc were quoting were ridiculous tbh. But at the freshers fairs at uni the Endsleigh stand was doing it quite a bit cheaper than their website - so I got £4k of contents cover including holiday cover for £44. Only thing is it doesn't cover laptops.
