Student possesions insurance

Hi,
My son is off to uni in September and we are currently trying to sort everything out.

We want to get him some possesions insurance as to be honest his 'halls' insurance is pretty naff.

We have had a quote from Barclays for just under £90 for £2000 worth of possesions including 'accidental damage'.

He has a very expensive PC that we need to insure plus the usual.

Can anybody recommend any insurers or specific policies for less than our first quote.

Obviously £90 will be a chunk out of his budget so if we can make some savings then we will definately take advantage.

Any advice would be welcomed

Thanks

Have you checked your own home/contents insurance to see if it will cover your son's possessions whilst in halls?

I just added my laptop onto my house insurance. There was no extra charge so check with them first. :)

Depending on which Uni he is going to, there may already be cover for his possessions in halls, with an option to add on cover for laptops etc.

Be aware that not all policies will cover theft if not involving violent and forcible entry, so if he leaves his door ajar and someone steals the laptop no cover will apply.

I do know that Endsleigh offer cover for some Unis and also offer the optional add-on for laptops and mobile phones for around £90 per annum.

If your household cover already extends to cover possessions in halls then any claim will impact on your household policy.

HOWEVER, you don't get to hear about it until you try to register your computer, if it cost more than £600 when new, it will not be covered by this free policy. This is not mentioned anywhere on the promotional literature, it's buried in the Terrms and Conditions of the policy. In my view, they should be reported for mis-selling.

Check your own household insurance - they usually cover students. Neither of my children had seperate insurance as they were covered on ours - I did ring and check even though I could read it in the policy.

    Hi
Ive been looking into this too - my daughter is going to be sharing a flat with her boyfriend so not in halls. Would a student insurance cover them or should they take out a tenants insurance?
I am insured with swinton so am off there tomorrow to ask

    Thanks

Don't know if you've seen them, but Cover4Students seem pretty cheap - addons etc obviously bump the cost up, but could be worth a try. I've not used them, but my girlfriend was with them last year. Can't vouch for how they are with claims etc, but it was a £10 excess on her policy

Endsleigh are also generally cheap. I had them through my halls in my first and second year (as our halls had a "basic" policy with our rent, so we got cheap upgrades). I claimed during my first year and they required proof of purchase etc. That is probably a standard thing across the board, but I've heard people say they've claimed with other companies without proof of purchase - a good thing if you have genuinely lost yours!

To say I wasn't too impressed with their customer service is putting it very nicely however. Their service during a claim was shambolic (I did get paid out, so it's not sour grapes). So much so that I'd never use them again
  • Check your house insurance, as I am covered by my parents. or have you tried endsleigh? http://www.endsleigh.co.uk/Student/Pages/student-insurance.aspx

If you take a £600+ laptop to Uni then you must be nuts IMO.
