for those that have been before, is it worth it? there is a lot of hype so i assume it must be good?!
last year we went to baytree garden centre, queued for 2 hours in the freezing cold, paid a lot of money and to be honest, were disappointed, so are hoping to do better this year!

  • After years of breaking my neck to get grotto tickets I have to honestly say this year I dont think Ill bother. The grotto isnt any better than any others Ive been too we go for the day out in London experience. I have sat on the phone/laptop for hours to get tickets and now Im more than likely going to miss out on a decent slot because I dont spend millions in there.

To be honest with you..... It ain't all that.

Not much of a wait and I think you get a mince pie too!!

The plus side is that you can keep the kids amused in the toy department all day, so it is a cheap day out and they also do the most fantastic chicken and Mayo baguette.
  • I did Harrods in 2009 and thought it was OK, did selfridges last year and that was amazing compared to Harrods. Will be booking selfridges again this year.

Harrods USED to be good, really good. But after last year (Have been every year for last 8 years) and tbh the year before too, I have said never again.

The stress to get a ticket is ridiculous and the experience has seriously gone downhill. There used to be entertainers, mince pies, mulled wine, water, gingerbread, fantastic displays and staff that really seemed to care. Last year the 'entertainment' was an awful (truly awful, my 6 year old could have read with more feeling) reading of 'Peter Pan' and even the decor was not very child friendly (clever, but not imagination stimulating for my children) and so the kids were bored in the queue. Santa was obviously young and skinny and not the best (they used to always be good). Then afterwards we lost DS1 (ASD) in the childrens dept and were scared witless until he was found, with a VERY snotty Harrods assistant initially saying well I can't help. it's not like we put out call outs or anything. The CS team came up trumps in the end and security were all over the level within minutes and found him but we left straight away and the whole thing left a bitter taste in my mouth!

Phew. didn't know I needed to offload all that!

Our charity sent some families there one year on the free tickets, some had an amazing time, others enjoyed it but wasn't worth the huge traveling. One family had lots of entertainers, another went a different day and there was no entertainment at all, which is odd. I saw the pictures, nice but only nice!

We went last year for the first time and although we booked a designated time slot, we still had to wait over an hour in a Peter Pan themed corridor which wasn't terribly stimulating for the kids over a prolonged period. The year before we went to Selfridges, which seemed much better organised, had more of a grotto and train ride.
