transport is soon becoming the largest cost an employee faces, it is getting to stages where you have to decide if you can afford to work for an employer, not the other way round.
Wages have just not kept pace with REAL inflation, you know that other type of inflation that real people pay, not that government calculated twaddle.
Working used to be a way of bettering yourself, these days its a way of chumping some working class pride above those that gave up slavery.

  • Transports costs certainly are one of the biggest costs - in fact, were I to stay working in Bristol it would cost nearly the same as my mortgage repayments.

Unfortunately public transport isn't necessarily cheaper.

Thanks to all for the advice/help above - I want to know how much they're going to take, it doesn't seem like to much to ask for them to tell me that at least!

The travelling issue is really fairly irrelevant here. The present employer has offered to pay transport costs for one year. This is a fairly generous offer in my view and the employer is under no obligation to make it.

The crux of this matter is that the OP just did not think about his/her training agreement when applying for other jobs. It probably was not discussed at the interview with the new firm either, putting the new firm in a difficult position with regard to the other employer. And before everybody starts shouting tat the other employer would not care two hoots, I think I know the sector this is in and if I am correct I can tell you that they will.

The option he/she has is to stay where she is, and finish his/her degree and put up with the travelling for a while looking for a flat in Bristol. He/she I presume does not own a house so there will be not very many relocation costs.
  • Mistral001 - have you read any of my previous posts?!

I have a mortgage, I own my own property. Therefore relocation costs would be considerable, which is why I am not in a position to do so.

I did think about my training agreement - it was discussed with my new company, and the fact that I have been studying part time on day-release is even mentioned straight away on my CV.

The fact is, I was in a job I enjoyed and studying part-time. The company then re-structured and closed the office I was working in, to an office an hours drive away (on a good day), with substantial new travel costs and loss of time. If we hadn't moved offices - I wouldn't have looked for another job.

The travelling issue really is the issue - the travel costs are for one year, they do not help after and as I have already said, I would not be able to afford to travel to work. It is better that I find something now, as I have done, than wait until the money runs out and I get into debt to try and get to work.

So please do not make judgements such as that on me, since you have got it all very wrong.

    .

Yes I read them all before posting. You did not mention that you owned a house.

You did not mention that you discussed the training agreement with your new employer, dispite me politely asking whether you had in post #6.

But thanks for mentioning them now.

    Best wishes for the future.
  • There are several posts where I mention I own my own home and have a mortgage.

Sorry perhaps my last post was written in hast and perhaps with a little annoyance. Especially when a poster does not reply to reasonable questions asked (ie. my question regarding whether the training agreement was mentioned by you at the interview). This is very relevant to the situation in my opinion. If it had not been mentioned then the new employer would need to know about it.

I see the important issue here is the training agreement and not the travel arrangements. I will leave it at that.
  • The only reason I even know they're doing it is because the team manager forwarded me a excel document which he sent to HR and had included on it to reclaim fees. I've queried it and said I need to know how much they're taking, but they're just being plain useless when it comes to saying how much. Since my last day is now tomorrow, I really need them to just decide the final figure.

I know that "long term" it is all for the best in terms of leaving this company, and I am now really looking forward to starting with my new employer next week. It's just very frustrating that this place can't seem to get their act together - if they're taking money this month, they must know how much?!

Try and get hold of your HR advisor asap and explain you need to know how much they will be reclaiming. I think it's only fair you know how much.

If you can't get hold of them today, call the Training Director/Manager and explain the situation. They can then kick some bottoms to see this gets done.

It's awful you've been left hanging.

Yes, the travel is the issue here, that is why the employer gave you a year to reorganise yourself!
For that it does not matter now anymore and cannot be used as an argument for leaving and avoiding for paying fees (well, it can, but question is how succesfully).

There must be in the contract mention of what "proportion" means or indication of how it will be calculated... ie every 12 mths you stayed with the ocmpany the fees paid in the 12 months will be "forgotten".
What exactly does the training contract say?

I realise it's besides the point but do you think maybe you might think about selling up and moving? If you're not happy earning so little perhaps you should be looking at moving to area with more opportunity? I'm just about to start a job in Wiltshire too but I wouldn't buy there until I had a secure long term future, as much as is possible.
