Sat-Nav security
Options
Hi,
I have recently had my tomtom satnav stolen from a car park.I find totom v.difficult to contact & when,I do very unhelpful. My question is why cannot they have a front screen security code/pin nos to prevent any thief from being able to use the unit, like car radios/mobile phones?
Can,I interest you in a campaign,I have contacted Watchdog & Which?
Regards,Paul

Why? It hasnt stopped mobile phones being stolen or car radios even though both are either useless or can be remotely disabled.
Simply way to stop it being nicked is to take it out your car when ever you are not in the car... the obvious problem remains the same with radios with removable fronts that people will still break a window because too many people just keep it in the thing in the gloveboxAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I have a Tomtom One New Edition and FIL has a Go700 both running the latest software downloaded and installed using Tomtom home software on PC and both have option to set owner and PIN number. They will not start up without the correct PIN being put in. Both are never left in the car.0

My Garmin has the 'Garmin Lock' feature (don't know if all Garmins have it). It works with a pincode in a similar way no doubt to DNKPets TomTom. Probably all the producers are moving in that direction? Being the victim of car crime is very frustrating and you have my sympathies. I've tried to train myself over the years to never ever leave anything of value in my car, particuarly on display...trouble is you've got to keep checking your passengers are 'complying'!0

I would have thought that i does not matter if it has a security feature or not, if you leave it in the car, it's going to get stolen!
Did the OP leave it on display in the car, or was it "hidden" in the glovebox etc?
I did own a TT700 until recently, i found that on every time i needed to get out of the car, it was a bit of a pain to remove the mount/wipe the screen and take the unit with you, in the end, myself and my wife would take it in turns to go to the toilet in the services, as i was paranoid somebody would be parked up watching everybody hiding their Sat Navs.Even if you take it with you, if you are seen to remove it from the screen, the thief may assume you have hidden it anyway, so you come back to a broken window.
In the end, i sold it to a mate, and i bought an inbuilt unit for my Golf, not as good as the TT, but i feel a lot better about leaving it.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -

A bti of advice, when removing the Sat Nav, remove the windscreen bracket too. Often, an opportunist will see the bracket on the screen and then assume the Sat Nav is in the car. Even if the Sat Nav isn't in the car at the time, thats the cost of getting the glass/lock reparied by the owner!!If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

Stealing sat navs seems to be "THE" crime of the moment. There must be a load of dishonest people waiting to buy them.
There are two sides to every story.
