Wish I'd never started dying my hair!

  • Could you use something like B4 and strip the dye out a bit?
  • I got mine cut REALLY short! And have kept it very short since. I look much better for it.

However, if that's not the way you want to go, how about getting it cut as short as you can then using temporary dyes from the poundshop until the permanent dyed hair has grown out?

This is an American site, but there's lots of ideas, support and some case-studies!

Sticking with the 3 weekly roots-jobs at the moment personally, but sharing your pain!!

I love the going grey looking great - they also have a page on Facebook. I'm 48 and have never coloured my hair, and never will, I look at this website when I get depressed about my greying hair! Good luck with growing it out Surbybird.

Ah. Tried that. I have just one thing to say about it...

    Ginger.

I put the brown dye straight back on afterwards!

I think I'm going to grow it out as much as possible and then just cut it short. I'm a bit worried about what it'll look like short but I'm going to do it anyway.

How about trying hair mascara, just on the roots while it's growing out and being a pain?

Hair mascara is pretty cheap (I buy it from Ebay, but you can get them from several places - and the ones I buy are made by L'Oreal). I've just had a quick look on Ebay, and L'Oreal black ones are going for 99p with £1 postage), so it may be worth a bit of experimenting.

I am the opposite hair problem, in that my natural blonde hair is getting darker as I get older, so in between highlights at the hairdressers the roots show up as too dark. So I use the gold one and a yellow-y one I found, and just streak them on a bit to lighten up the roots. They are applied with a brush, like normal mascara, so you can apply as much or as little as you want.

I've used the blue and copper colours before now to play around a bit, which also look pretty good. They just wash out at your next shampoo, so are pretty risk-free to try. (NB You can get glittery and neon colours as well, but that might not be quite the effect you want....:D)

If nothing else it's quite fun to use them, and you could find they help you get through the trickier bits of growing your hair out.

I used it to strip color out of DD hair, when she decided to go red.

you need to put a temp light ash blonde on top if it goes ginger, and it covers the ginge tinge. Then depending on what color you want to go, leave few days/washes then put it on. I left DD hair for a few weeks and foiled it myself using BB blonde.

Hi have you got a link to the black ones on ebay please? I've just looked but can't find them?

Also, do they dry "crispy" like normal mascara (which I have been known to use on my parting in an emergency :o and actually covers ok except for the crispiness!)

    Hi there

Was going to suggest the goinggraylookinggreat site but Bronnie beat me to it.

It finally gave me the courage to go for it - mine is now a lovely silver and currently in a short crop - a la Judi Dench. I love it. I think hairdressers call it the "Pixie"

My hair is in a much better condition, no more greasy roots, dry split ends from over-dyeing.

The first couple of inches or so can be difficult and it is tempting to give in but stick with it.

You could try bandanas or scarves etc tied "artfully" over the roots.

I use silver enhancing shampoos and brighteners from time to time - any supermarket, Boots etc. to tone down any yellow.

Stick with it and then join me in becoming a "Silver Fox":D
