Wish I'd never started dying my hair!

Is it too dark to add some blonde highlights just to soften the transition line from brown to brown/grey?
I did the blonde highlights previously but my hair is so dark that it was very high maintenance. Has anyone tried DIY highlights using a kit (I'm still trying to be MSE about this)? At one stage I was spending over £120 every 4-6 weeks at the hairdressers keeping the highlights looking reasonable, which is why I just went back to dying it dark brown.

I'm exactly the same, It was suggested to me that I dye it blonde and then let the grey grow out so it wasnt so obvious.
I havent had the nerve yet, I just get to the point of letting it grow out and it looks awful, so i dye it again.
That's what I currently do but I am determined to beat this thing!

Could you continue to dye the parting with one of those Clairol touch up shades which is designed to fade, then when you've gone mostlly greay hasve hair cut and switch the parting over half an inch to hide the dyed bit?
I haven't looked at those. Are they expensive?

I think you only have the two options....dye it, or don't.....grin and bare it or cave in...it's up to you!!! Good luck!!

Thanks, Skymist.
I think I'm going to........ grow it a bit longer and then have it all cut off!
I just hope it ends up a nice silver grey.

I admit it was a bit drastic but a few months of getting used to it and I love it. It's great because the colour is exactly what it should be, it matches my skin tone and my eyes. I'm lucky because I'm not "salt and pepper" grey but bright white/platinum. I'm 36, it will be fine if you keep the hairstyle funky and youthful.
Hope this helps
Thanks, Siren.
Mine isn't going to be white but I think I can live with whatever it turns out like. It's currently only shoulder length and I might get it cut a bit shorter anyway before the final step. I've not had short hair for years but I quite fancy one of those elfin cuts. Hopefully, as I don't look my age (I'm nearly 47 but usually pass for late 30s) it won't look too awful.

Ah, what a great site! Thanks, Bronnie!
I'm immensely jealous of how fabulous those ladies look so I am going to persevere, grow it a bit more and then cut it all off.
I feel less bothered by the transition now that I know it's not just me going through this!
And I'm already planning how to spend the money that I'll save on hair dye.

In the interests of saving money, Im looking for some suggestions of what to do about my grey hair.
I'm naturally a dark brunette and started going grey in my early twenties. I have therefore been dying it dark brown for the best part of 25 years, apart from a brief period of being blonde.
However, times are hard now and I can't justify the expense of dying my hair to cover up the grey so have decided to be brave and go 'au naturel'. Eek!
Here's my dilemma. I haven't dyed my hair now for 2 months and the grey is coming through nicely. It looks awful through! Dark hair and very grey roots (grey is more than 50%). Is there any way of lessening the transition apart from dying it again? I am toying with having it cut short but that would mean it being about 3cm long at the moment!
I wish I'd never started dying it in the first place now.

thats interesting. years ago, i used to dye my hair bright blond, now its a natural dark blonde
however, as much as i would now love a chocolatey brown, i know when i see people who have dyed their hair darker than it really is, when you see lighter growth coming through (either grey or just their lighter hair colour) it always looks to me as if they have thinning hair
i would go to a platnum blond and then start using henna type dyes or those colouring shampoos that go nicely with the colour grey you have0 -

I'm still salt and pepper with about a 50% sprinking and I only do my parting and round the sides of my face so I get 2- 3 goes out of each £4.99 pack.
I'm still doing a whole head dye in something close to my natural colour every other month or so as well.
I'd love to get off that treadmill, but I know I won't go the pretty sort of grey for another 40 years or so.
At the moment most of my hair has an inch of grey sprinkled regrowth but my parting and round my face have been coloured fairly recently.
Just can't decide whether to try that new L'Oreal Mousse and see if it colours my grey or try and bite the bullet and let the grey run rampage....Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Einstein0 -

:T:T:TWhat a fantastic site! I'm going to make a cuppa and have a good browse around on it.Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Einstein0 -
my MIL had lovely dark hair but now she is 63, yes she is grey but she uses those shampoo thingies from Superdrug i think they cost £1 and cos shes got thin hair she can get two uses out of one. the color she chooses is medium brown or honey blonde i think, it looks gorgeous, when she lets her hair grow and doesnt color it, i think it ages her.Mejor morir de pie que vivir toda una vida de rodillas.0
