I would recommend this book which was an excellent start to understanding what you need to do in order to achieve results. It helped me loads in setting up my couple of sites and then as the posts above say get working on the backlinks and post content.

Get to the top on google by David Viney it includes 6 months access to a great seo website with forums and tools for use.

    Register your URL at dmoz.org

All the major search engines index from DMOZ and will pick up your site a lot quicker.
Also make sure that you have your meta tags done.

I think its best to wait a while before registering on DMOZ. They are not going to consider a new site. It best to wait around 6 months and then there is the time it takes to getting round to your submission.

I think SEO companies/consultants are getting a bad rap. There are some whose reputation are dodgy but I reckon most provide a good service based on their expertise.

As said in this forum though, you can do a lot of it yourself. The hardest is getting (quality) backlinks and this is where SEO companies (and other sources) come in. But it depends on the content you produce (or if its a unique service which is creating buzz) and whether it is being shared. If it is being shared around, you'll probably get good backlinks in a matter of time.

My advice is get to know SEO, do it online or find a cheap course and then look at your options. Keywords are what it is all about and getting your site right can have a big bearing. Google has a free tool (Google Keyword Tool) for checking keywords and volumes per month.

On your domain name being the words which people use to search is a very good start, it is ideally what you should choose imo. Page 4 isn't a bad start either. A lot of people start a lot farther back than that!!

If you use something like Wordpress this makes SEO a lot easier what with all the plug ins they have. There is still the issue of backlinks though but it depends who you are up against.

More help/advice? Give me a shout or send me a PM as I personally use some other tools which help me with my blog such as tracking my links and so on.
