Comet fail to warn of dangers

Having recently purchased an Oven from Comet, just 3 weeks after its installation the Glass on the Oven Door shattered with a huge bang whilst cooking at below 190deg's...
Comet say this can happen with repeated opening and closing of your oven door..we had only had it 3 weeks !!!!!
Comets Engineer tells a tale thats its really common as the glass gets stressed during transit bla bla bla..
Lets not bother warning anyone then hey
Thankfully no family member was in the kitchen at the time and i cant imagine what may have happened if they were.
Comet's response was that we were simply unlucky, and that together with an awful lot of sorry's and template based customer service emails is all we should receive for being without cooking facilities for 13 days whilst they organised the replacement of the glass.
Comets policy is NOT to compensate despite selling an appliance that put our personal safety at risk.More protection buying from knock off Nigel than Comet...thanks for nothing
Does anyone on here have any advice,i have tackled customer services and just got the straight bat standard responses ??????

They do not have to compensate for what "might" have happened only what did happen (and natural consequences as a result). Think about it, it's not hard to conceive what MIGHT have happened when I was driving in my car but my insurance is hardly likely to compensate for what didn't happen.
Exploding / shattering safety glass is a naturally occurring phenomena that has come up a number of times on this board. See Wiki for more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage
They should replace the glass / appliance and may offer some kind of goodwill gesture. I am sure you can cope cooking with a microwave for a couple of weeks.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
There was a similar thread recently and I think it was discovered that glass can sometimes do this, albeit very rare.
As long as they are repairing it free and with minimal convenience what other compensation do you want?0 -
If the appliance had been out of guarantee i could half understand, but it was 3 weeks old.Driving a car relies on your own competence so thats hardly a fair comparison to an Oven cooking food.
Its ironic the new oven was more dangerous than the old one we replaced..
A goodwill gesture would have been appreciated..not a thanks for your £500 but you have been most unfortunate to get the one with the glass that breaks Mr Farrell
Comet need to make people aware of the possible dangers0 -
It is a fair comparison because you appear to want compensating for something that didn't happen, in the same way that no one got hurt whilst I was driving this morning!
What exactly do you want? You should be able to get a replacement or a refund if you wish but if you read the link I posted it is not just a reflection of Comet but a potential issue with all safety glass.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
With the car example, tyres may suddenly burst leaving you in a potentially dangerous position -- this isn't necessary as a result of incompetence, but could be a result of a million surrounding factors0

I love the expression its okay nobody died or worse things happen at sea and all that....its a lesson learnt for sure.0 -
What makes you think that Knock Off Nigel offers more protection?david_farrell wrote: »Comets policy is NOT to compensate despite selling an appliance that put our personal safety at risk.More protection buying from knock off Nigel than Comet...thanks for nothing

Well do you think we should be compensated for things that could have but did not happen?
If that's the case I am suing you for running me over in your car. It didn't happen but it could have
The classic line is still waiting to be rolled out...!!Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
That one about "what if" and "children?"0

So what Comet should really do is have a large sticker on all their ovens stating that the glass may or may not shatter at any given moment, the dishwashers may burst into flames, the microwaves may cause harm to unborn babies, and sometimes the washing machines may flood
Imagine, my baby playing on the floor while the washing machine floods. A child can drown in less than an inch of water.
Wont somebody pleeease think of the childrennnn?0
