The title says it all.... I usually make a couple of chutneys at Christmas but often end up throwing stuff away which is NOT very MSE, so this year I have decided to just do one chutney, some pickled shallots and chilli jam.

However, I can't for the life of me figure out which chutney recipe I have used in the past! I have read the recipes in all my Christmas recipe books and none of them seem quite right. All I remember is that it is NOT the one containing dried apricots, as I remember that being horrible.

So.....can I have your lovely recipes please? :D I want something that doesn't contain any dried apricots, that is yummy and will work well over the Christmas season for those meals where you have cheese, cold meat, pât!, bread, sausage rolls etc (oh I am salivating at the thought!). It doesn't have to be overtly 'Christmassy' so don't worry about it continuing cranberries or anything!

Thank you hugely in advance........over to you! :D

This walnut chutney is amazing. My friend very kindly gave me a small jar the other day.

Thanks, I know there are recipe threads, but I could google and read random recipes myself, I want people to tell me what's their favourite as it's hard to tell from reading a recipe if it's good or not :) thanks!

Thank you! This is doubly exciting as walnuts are the only nuts I am not allergic to (I recently discovered) and I have been looking for recipes to use them! :)

I know you said that you wanted one that didn't contain dried apricots, but have you tried Delia's Christmas Chutney ? I've been making it for a few years now, it's so easy & never fails. I always have to have a reserve jar in the cupboard or hubby starts getting twitchy ! It's brilliant with cold meats, cheese, pork pies etc. I'd thoroughly recommend it - you cant tell that it has apricots in it, as the long slow cooking melts everything down into a sort of unctuous oozy paste.

(I substitute 2 tsp of ground allspice for the allspice berries btw)

I'm not sure, but I *think* that is the one I made last year and didn't like :( I have her Christmas book. I wish I'd written down over the last few years which recipes I've tried and which were good. I will definitely be doing that this year!

    Thanks for your reply :)

i use all the everyday value stuff from tesco - always works really well in this recipe

ETA: just added all the ingredients to the basket, except for the allspice, and it comes to £10 (& you'll have half the apricots left over)

I would be cheaper if you have a local store that sells out of those big bins of dried fruit - we have one near us and it works out about a third of the above price
