Daughter has visible heartbeat - she's panicking

Hi all,

we're on holiday and my 9 yr old is panicking because her heart beats are visible, pulsing in her chest. You can see it from above her breast area.

Is this anything we should be worried about or is it common? Other than that, she's fine, swimming and running around etc

you can usually see the pulse in your wrist and ankle as well.. and under between your ribs..

Of course it is normal.. it means she is alive.. I cant believe she hasnt seen it before now!

What came first, the panic or the visible beats? Seriously, did DD exert herself? What your describing is probably just a visible pulse.

Heart murmurs or abnormalities in rhythm are relatively common, it's when they compromise circulation that it becomes a problem (a lot less common). I would suggest you take her to your GP tomorrow to put your mind at rest; if there are any suspicious symptoms he'll arrange for an ECG and echocardiogram if necessary. In the meantime, get her to breathe deeply and watch the visibility subside.

If there is an pain radiating down her arm, get her to suck on an indigestion tablet. If it doesn't subside within a couple of minutes it would be a good idea to seek urgent medical attention.

  • I suspect it's nothing to worry about but if in doubt try and see a GP.

Depends where you are. If in UK it should be easy enough, but if you are abroad that's a different kettle of fish.

They have qualified GPs abroad too, but agree with your post. :j

Ive just checked much to dh delight and yes I can see my heart beat easily too. Id be much more concerned if I couldn't. If its more obvious than normal maybe she is just exerting herself more than normal. If she is fine otherwise I really wouldn't worry about it.

I think it's just normal, I can see mine too. I think unless she has any other symptoms such as shortness of breath, tightness in the chest area etc then it's normal. Of course if you or you DD are concerned then get it checked by a doctor :)

Do you know if she's seen something on tv or read/heard something that might have made her worry she has a certain condition/problem? I know when I was younger I used to read/hear about various conditions and would worry that I had them/would get them!

    Hope she feels better soon

I remember when I was seven looking at my bare chest in themirror and being horrified that I could see my 'skeleton' which was my ribs as I was very skinny then. Justa kind of sudden awareness of something not hitherto oberved.
