E.ON RHT EnergyPlan 25 ?????

Turns out its not possible to wire the storage heaters into the off peak
Its costing £1.50+ per night for underfloor and tbh it takes an age to heat up; maybe I need to use the storage heaters on a timer so its warm when I get home form work and when I get up.
I wonder if I should go back to Eon, ask them to remove the RHT meter and just have a normal meter which I can then sign up to a more competitive tariff on (i.e. one that gives you a reduction on standard rates). Does that make any sense?
RHT seems a very outdated idea - plus part of the thermostat for the underfloor is live which is a bit scary.
Apologies for continuing to pick your brains, I'm just a bit scared/uncertain at present (its been a while since have lived on my own) and juggling that with not wanting to be cold!!0 -

Who says, and why?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
The electrician who came round last night with the landlady who owns the flat (I move fast!). The cost I worked out by taking a meter reading from my usage last night and running it past Eon. Running out of options I feel!0

Hi Sam
We can certainly replace the RHT meter with a more conventional single/two rate type. There's currently a cost of £51.06 for this work.
However, in these cases I always recommend customers have their set up checked out by an independent approved electrician before going ahead with the switch.
I understand from previous posts that there's doubt as to how or if the RHT meter is wired into your heating circuits.
With this type of metering arrangement, it's usual the meter will be wired directly into the water/heating circuits. Changing the meter can, therefore, sometimes have an impact on the water/heating.
Hope this helps a little Sam. Give me a shout if I can help further as happy to do so.

Hi Malc
Thanks for your reply!
The RHT works for sure and is wired into the underfloor only. The water heater and Storage heaters operate via 3 pin plugs wired to the other circuit. I've done some research and the u'floor takes around 1 - 2 hrs to warm up and is costing me 25p/hr minimum @ 65-70 F.
In your opinion, given that I would like heat from 5pm-ish - 12am-ish (the type I have gives heat straight away but has no output regulator) then 6am - 8am in the morning... would I be better off, financially, (plus off setting the £50 to change the meters over) with the Storage on a more competitive standard tariff (I think you do one called Saveonline??) or to keep on with the under floor on the RHT meter? My gut is telling me to sack the underfloor and go for a cheaper Standard... Or would it be possible to get the meter changed to an Economy 7 meter? Would that be possible?
It might just be me unwilling to 'think outside the box' but surely storage heaters only make sense on an off-peak tariff??0 -
Hi Sam
It's certainly possible to fit an Economy 7 meter provided the electrics are suitable as per my earlier post.
Depending on the region, you'll need to use approx between 40 to 55 per cent of electricity during the off peak period for Economy 7 to be economical.
I suspect our Saveonline tariff will be cheaper than your current tariff but difficult to say conclusively without details of your consumption pattern.
Saveonline is available with both conventional single rate and Economy 7 meters but not with RHT.
Generally, customers with conventional electric storage heaters are better off with Economy 7. Again, this depends on the usage at individual properties.
Your situation is complicated, though, by the underfloor heating and how this fits into the overall equation.
I would suggest you talk with one of our specialist consumption teams. They're more experienced with the different types of heating systems and what metering set ups are best for each combination.
Hope this points you in the right direction Sam.

Thanks Malc!
Could you clarify what you mean by "Your situation is complicated, though, by the underfloor heating and how this fits into the overall equation"?
Do you mean technically, in that it might make a change of meter impossible, or do you mean that a decision needs to be made on whether to continue using it as fitting an Econ 7 would mean it would no longer be able to be used... or something else?
Have you details how to contact your specialist consumption team? Do I phone Eon and ask for them?0 -
I suggest that you get the storage heaters connected to E7, as intended, and switch off the underfloor heating. Then use convectors or fan heaters to top up if necessary in the evenings. This is not ideal (or cheap, if the latter have to be used a lot), but I don't see any other real options. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Sorry for the confusion Sam.
I was just speculating about the relative costs between a conventional Economy 7 meter and your current RHT set up.
The actual cost will depend on how much you use the underfloor heating and how much you use the storage heaters.
I wasn't commenting on the technicalities involved, not up on those, only the costs.
To talk to the Consumption team, please call the number on your bills and ask to be put through to this team. They're open between 8am and 8pm Mondays to Fridays and between 8am and 4pm Saturdays.
Alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile and I'll be happy to give you their number (MSE don't like us posting phone numbers on the open forum).
Sorry again for the confusion but hope this helps.
