  • This is me being controversial

Would it be easier for the BGs if questions were left to be answered by the members rather than they try to find an old thread to answer it?

I know that the old hands get a bit fed up seeing the same questions coming up over and over but nothing will ever change that, even though there is the 'start old style here' thread and the mega index etc if newbies don't look at them before they ask the question the what can you do?

The way I see it, O/S membership comes in 'layers' there are the founder members who have seen every question imaginable over a hundred times and have 'served their time' on answering questions, then there are the brand new members eager to learn everything, in between is the newish member who can still recall how they were helped only a few weeks ago and still have the enthusiasm to give someone else a leg up, I think that they'd be the first on the scene to answer the hedgehog filleting question.

What would happen in an average day if the BG's sat on their hands and did nothing? they'd keep a watchfull eye as always but is it worth an experiment to see how things pan out for 24 hours?

    Not controversial at all :)

All three of us really enjoy helping and finding things for members. We wouldn't be volunteers here otherwise.

As for sitting on hands... I tried that one day... stuck it out for six hours... then moved four posts, merged five, and answered a fair number of questions that had remained unanswered for quite some time.

While it's honestly and really nice to see members helping each other out, and long may it continue, (and your earlier comments are right when it comes to "time served" and "apprenticeships" :)) the main thrust of this thread isn't to ask people to help each other because they already do where they can - it is a request to try and do your best (in the general sense of "your") to get your posts into the right place where you can.

    That helps everybody, honest :)
Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Any views are mine and are not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.

Do you think maybe that questions get left unanswered because we know that the 3 members of the cavalry will come along and do it for us? :o:o if you weren't there, always willing (we know that this is so and appreciate it) we'd have to look after ourselves more? maybe you're helping us too much and making life harder for yourselves in the process.

I think you made a good point when you said that you don't have the time to be one of us any more and join a thread just for fun as a member because your always 'on duty', that's sad - you always wrote really interesting posts

Thats a good point, AT. I dont know about everyone else, but I know that I find OS so busy, there are usually at least 2, maybe 3 or 4 pages of new threads alone, everyday. I do try and go through them and answer questions/link to threads where I can, but alas, there are not enough hours in the day.
