Charging for a receipt from a corner shop??

It's recently come to my attention that a shop near me has started charging 5p for a receipt ... regardless of what is being purchased.
Is this legal? They don't provide a receipt for this either ... otherwise we'd be buying receipts to infinity....

If true....I think your local trading standards might be interested in this, how did it come to your attention , urban myth or first hand experience.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I work in a mental health hostel and we have to put everything through the petty cash system, therefore need receipts for it. Twice in the last three days different clients have returned with a newspaper receipt and said that they had been charged for it. I might well try it myself on my way home from work this afternoon and see if they try the same on me.0

There is no legal requirement for a receipt.0

As above there is no legal requirement to provide a receit - I imagine most things fro ma corner shops dont get returned which is why they dont really bother
That said, it puts the customer in a difficult position if they do need to return somehting and have no proof of purchase.0 -

But isn't illegal not to provide one when requested if the vendor is charging VAT?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I would say that if a seller makes it a term of contract that the buyer must have proof of purchase to return goods, they should provide that proof. If they don't, I would imagine they are in breach of their own terms and conditions. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

What kind of receipt? A VAT one or the one from the machine if you pay by card? If the latter, I'd be cross to be charged a fee - it's not unreasonable to want your card receipts for balancing your statement each month."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

If its not a legal requirement to issue then its not a requirement for proof of purchase either.0 -

But if the seller insists on proof purchase, what proof could they possible accept, especially if the buyer is paying cash? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
