Carpet or laminate flooring?

I prefer wood flooring. Never considered tiles but quite fancy slate tiles through my hallway, no doubt thats an expensive option.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Having 3 dogs and two kids I now have slate tiling in the hallway and kitchen. Having had the most rubbish laminate in the lounge, I am glad we ripped it out and replaced with a good quality carpet. The laminate was forever needing to be mopped and bushed with tumbleweed blowing around the corners. The tiles in the hallway always look nice and only need a mop once a day (even in this weather), and the carpet only needs hoovering once a day too with a quick clean with the Bissell once in a while.0

We are buying a house at the moment and the first thing we are going to do is to change from carpets in bathrooms to probably vinyl and the hallway and dining room to engineered wood. Probably one of the cheapest ones (maybe Ikea - I quite like the one they do in bamboo, light one). I just don't want muddy shoes on the carpet!!!!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

Funny how some ideas from overseas don't catch on here. In America on holiday we had washing machine and tumble dryer in the bathroom. I thought this was so logical, to have the machines nearer the laundry basket, and to keep the clothes upstairs. Wanted to do it in my old house when we revamped the bathroom but was told it was a bad idea and affect the saleability of the house.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Plus they don't normally like having plugs in the bathroom of a house not the safest place.0

Totally agree with Donstoh.
Tiles throughout downstair heavy usage areas. (Just as easy to lay as laminate IMHO - just takes a little longer)
I did that at my last house (Used porcelain - not ceramics) and the comments from all of my visitors were all very positive. Esp EA when it came to sellling. It gives a much more expensive look than laminate.
New place will be the same bar the TV room which will be carpeted and no kids allowed
Toilets/Bath/ shower rooms will also be tiled. Bedrooms - undecided yet. Carpets do harbour germs and aren't good for asthma sufferers.
Also, laminate in bedrooms would mean that vacuum cleaner stays downstairs too.

DONT LAMINATE UPSTAIRS, if you have a prob with your rads you may have to lift up floor for pipework.<we know been there>, and let me tell you its a sure fast way to get your neighbours to hate you, the noise is awful. You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0
