It doesn't necessarily mean you have Conficker (or any other infection), but I suggested it since you'd mentioned trouble downloading or installing security software.

Do you mind posting a few logs?

    First is a security check:
    http://www.users.on.net/~russ/SecurityCheck.exe
Just run it, press any key when it asks, and post the log that comes up in Notepad.

Secondly an 'enhanced' Hijackthis log. It'll give some further info which would be useful:
    http://www.users.on.net/~russ/RSIT.exe
Just run it, and paste it either here or at http://pastebin.com/ if you can and put the link to the log in here. If it won't let you put in a link, then just the end bit.

e.g. if the link is http://pastebin.com/uUEdqK2J then just give the /uUEdqK2J bit

Lastly, I'd strongly suggest running the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and do a Full scan. I've hosted it for you and renamed it:
    http://www.users.on.net/~russ/wkb.exe

And let us know how it goes.

Since Stopzilla has been installed, I'd try to remove it using Revo uninstaller in safe mode. A standard uninstall unfortunately doesn't work very well at all with Stopzilla, as it's a rogue program and doesn't particularly want to be removed. Stopzilla, as its namesake suggests, will grind the system to a halt.

edit: Just to be clear, any virus detections made by Stopzilla will likely be meaningless. Your computer may very well be infected though if redirected to Stopzilla, as there is malware out there that gets money by doing this.

I'd restart the computer in 'Safe mode with networking' (i.e. and keep hitting F8 until you get the option), which should prevent Stopzilla from starting.

Then install a trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro (http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html) and run it .

Look for Stopzilla in the list and select it to be Uninstalled using Advanced Mode, following this general guide here:
    http://blogs.howtogeek.com/mysticgeek/2008/04/29/completely-uninstall-programs-and-more-with-revo-uninstaller/

Afterwards restart back into normal mode, hopefully it'll be gone.
