EDF 100% monthly DD increase!

Hi all,

Just had a new statement from EDF with a DD increase from £76.00 per month to £168.00 per month.

Now I was expecting a increase based on latest media annoucements but 100%..................blimey!

After the initial shock where I was prepared to ring them up and stick up their trumpet... having calmed down and thought it through what recourse do I have with them to tell them that I am not prepared to pay this................other than switching but moving from one to another really does not appear to make a huge amount of difference in cost as all the big 6 play the price increase game!

Any thoughts appreciated please!

Thanksicon10.gif

  • Have you got a debit on the account? Is the latest bill based on actual meter readings? In other words was the lower payment enough to cover your useage? If the answer is yes then give them a ring.

I would look at your useage for the last year and how much you have paid direct debit every month. If your not always in debit or at least not alot then they dont have a leg to stand on.

EON tried this with my nan last year even though she was £200 in credit and had been at least £100 in credit for the last 2 quarterly bills. I emailed them and told them in no certain terms how they were in the wrong. They quickly changed it back and refunded the credit (blamed an automated system!)

This post worries me though as i have just switched mine and 3 family members to EDF fixed price 2014. I have found EON and Scottish Power mostly to be ok with DD monthly costs and hope EDF will follow.

Let us know how you get on!

gemmalouanna has asked some relevant questions which I hope you will respond to.

I have recently suffered a similar Edf DD review idiocy. The electricity element virtually doubled as a result of a few days of zero consumption. Essentially "impossible" in the circmstances. Interesting that you relate a very similar story which indicates an untested deterministic behaviour in the billing system.

I have a theory which fits, which is that they (correctly) reduced the electricity element and then added the reduced electricity element back on to the original dual-fuel payment.

As I say just a theory and if Edf want to debunk it in this forum that's fine by me.

If you manage to get through (IME about 15 minutes on a weekday morning) I imagine you will get the previous payment reinstated without any protest. I have raised a complaint and await an explanation. They have 10 days to respond.
  • i called them when we got a big DD increase - 5 mins to get through in the morning (friday am) and had a caht with the person on the phone - outcome - dd back to where it was.

    Same scenario as Jack above.

Got a silly revised amount for gas and electricity in the post.

Spent 5 minutes with my usage and worked out what my consumption actually was.

Rang them, went through the figures calmly and we agreed what was the right amount to pay.

Absolutely no problem. I didn't want to underpay to find a big bill or overpay in case I wanted to switch at the end of the year.

No need to get in a tiz yet. Just ring them and have your facts and figures available when you do,

I really hate how they estimate your energy usage, this summer me and OH moved out of the house to live with ou respective parents and EDF wanted £150 as their 'estimated reading'
I was like sod that, put down a guestimate reading (i had already read the meter when we left for summer and we have only been back for one day!) and they reevaluated it to £50, which is still high but my guess is probabaly too high.

Tried to pay online didn't accept my transaction -.-
  • Since switching to EDF in Jan, and providing monthly readings, they have adjusted my DD every month, as if assuming that the latest consumption figures would be constant throughout the year. They put it up at my request once, when I pointed out that the figures were ridiculous and then when I switched to fixed rate- and put it back down the very next month. I emailed them about it but never got a reply. It will be interesting when the first winter reading goes in!

Since switching to EDF in Jan, and providing monthly readings, they have adjusted my DD every month, as if assuming that the latest consumption figures would be constant throughout the year.

They are not even conforming to their own (two review) published policy.

    http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/direct-debit/direct-debit-existing-direct-debit-customers.shtml

They reviewed my electricity after 2 days supply, using the opening reading entered twice due to MyAccount problems with original opening read. This caused the electricity component of the dual-fuel payment to double (for no consumption).:D

The billing system Direct Debit review sub-system is "worse" than untested. I would normally recommend regular customer reads but, on the basis of these forum, reports customers should be very wary of entering customer reads until Edf have sorted the billing system.

And if annual consumption is already known, hardly necessary. Wait for Edf to use their interim review. The annual review is in April.

I had the opposite, they just decreased mine by 75% ! I had to phone them and ask them to put my D/D back to what it was as I would be so far out on the bills.

I have unfortunately been a customer for a month now and have had 4 seperate DD increases and decreases ranging from £90 a month for dual fuel to £10.I am unable to give them my first gas reading as the online account sometimes has a facility to enter the reading which i have done once then other times there is no where to put the reading.I have e-mailed it but for some reason cannot get through on the phone my longest wait before hanging up was 40 mins.on the plus side i have got my elec account up and running but i refuse to update readings until they acknowledge my gas account,i have now complained to their cust directopr etc and if not sorted in 2 weeks i will cancel DD and take matters further they are a joke
