Tesco Direct - a small warning

I'm sure you are all savy enough to know this... but Tesco Direct pulls a bit of a marketing "trick".
They give a list of other suppliers and their prices - showing that tesco beats them.
When the other supplier is actually cheaper they just don't list them on the page.
e.g.
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.211-4989.aspx
Tesco selling at £549 which they say beats Argos by £100.
But the same TV is available on Amazon for just £429
If it was a true comparison panel it would show all the other cheaper retailers
Naughty Tesco.

Why would they actively tell you where to buy their products cheaper? It's hardly a 'trick'.Legal team on standby0

I've never seen anyone advertise that a competitor is cheaper. Hardly something unique to Tesco!0
-
Not up to tesco to advertise where soemthing is cheaper and its down to the consumer to either buy form tesco direct or buy from elsewhere.0

My local Tesco has these littlla markers on the SEL showing how much more expensive the local Asda etc is.
9 times out of 10 these prices are wrong. Tut tut.0 -
Having not looked through all the items to find one that does are you sure they ever list Amazon in that list? Considering it doesn't have a physical store to go to to pick the item up the following day there is wiggle room for them not to include it at all.0

What I find so funny about those labels is the way they proudly trumpet the Tesco price even when it is exactly the same as that at Asda.
I suppose it makes sense since Asda have a reputation for being cheap (and crap), but they always make me smile. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Yes - they do list Amazon (and the rest) on their "comparison" when they are either the same price or cheaper. It is a marketing trick (for the not so bright amongst us) as people may assume when they say that it is a comparison that all parties are compared.0

I don't think anyone would believe 'that all parties are compared'. That would be a very long comparison table given the hundreds of retailers which stock a product.0 -

Exactly right, the conclusion that the other prices are a price search engine, and not marketing is not sensible or reasonable.
It wouldn't catch out a reasonably intelligent person.0 -
frankly you are an idiot if you purchase an item with a high retail price and instead of shopping around rely on the company selling the products price comparisons! They are always going to make out they are offering a better deal than anyone else. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
