one thing - your avast is still on version 5, you should really have updated to version 6. Go here to update to latest version

It's just because Avast 5 installed into that folder, and so updates within the same folder :) New installs of Avast go into a version-neutral folder (\Avast).

Forgot to say also that I did defrag the system yesterday afternoon with the monthly system defrag program that Russ suggested, it took 5.5 hours to complete
5 mins from when the wallpaper showed to the icons appearing, now they appear about 1 min 20 secs

Nice, lean and mean machine :)

Still got the Apple Mobile Device on there, should be uninstallable from the Add/Remove bit (if you uninstalled iTunes).

Also still got Java. It really is worth uninstalling it completely. It's one of the main programs on the computer that is 'exploited' so that malware can install itself without your input.

This chart is taken directly from a malware server (serving the Blackhole Exploit Kit), which was accessed by security researchers in June 2011. It kept figures on what kinds of computers were infected and how. As you can see on the bottom right, Java exploits made up the bulk of the methods used to infect people:

Basically anyone running Windows XP on internet explorer with Java is at the highest risk of having their computer exploited if they come across a page with an exploit kit on it. The crazy thing is, most of those people I'd bet didn't even need Java on there in the first place.

Ok I will completely remove java then and see how I go, I as a bit reluctant though because I do a lot of surveys on the net and I think a lot of them them require you to have java. I'm going to uninstal quicktime too and see how I go without that as well, can always put them back if they prove to be needed

What is the best way to fully remove java and quicktime? as I know often stuff gets left behind even with add remove
    Thanx

1m20 is still slowish. creating a new user account may help possibly

In internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging to stop this running

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE

distributed link tracking service is nothing to do with cookies/cashback etc.

You may wish to do a disk image now, so you can recover this setup in future.

I have already ticked disable script debugging (internet explorer) and disable script debugging (other) in the internet options advanced before I posted the last log so not sure why thats happening. Its actually abot 1 min 50 secs from wallpaper to icons appearing I re timed it just now, but it is better than it was at least
    Thanx

Might be an idea to find out from your daughter what previous antivirus programs she's had on it. They uninstall themselves poorly (the worst offenders are McAfee, AVG, and Avast) so need a removal tool run afterwards. One computer I was cleaning had 4-5 different antivirus programs over 6years, so I ran the relevant removal tools a few times each - and they all found something.

Here's a good list of the removal tools for many of the antivirus programs out there:

    Alternatively just google.

Just wanted to say thankyou to everyone that helped with advice here, its much better than it was and will keep me going untill I actually do find a desktop pc and monitor that I want :) There are lots of laptop deals at the moment rather than desktops because its coming up to back to school and uni time again so not much about

I will do a disc image for this and the new pc when I get one but I've never done it before and it takes me 10 times longer to understand and do things than other people so I'm going to leave that until I get a new pc and do them both

Thanks very much everyone again :)
    Thanx
