Student Broadband Packages

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences trying to get a student a broadband package for their accommodation. Myself and my girlfriend (student) have just taken out a lease on a flat for 9 months, however we are both aware that most broadband companies offer only 12-18 months.

Are there any broadband companies out there that offer a monthly package or a special student package; im aware Virgin Media do one for 9 months but still seems pretty costly.

Alternatively is there any way that anyone has actually gone about getting student broadband on a normal 12 month fixed term and managed to get out of the contract early?

A search on the forums only brought up a small amount of information.

Kind Regards
Sam

There are a few companies that do 3 or 1 month contracts (most notably the excellent bethere if you can get it)

The best place to start is to look up your new address on SamKnows and see who is listed as available.

If you let us know who your choice is between, we can point you in the direction of some decent options.

It should be noted that most of the companies offer a reasonable discount (or dont charge for connection/router) for taking the 12 months, so it may work out cheaper to pay for an unused 3 months at the end of the year than to do things properly!

    Zen do 1 month contract.

"One Month Minimum Broadband (ADSL) Contract Your Broadband (ADSL) contract with Zen is only on a rolling monthly basis, unlike many other ISPs who state a 12 month minimum"

    Thank you for that

ive never heard of zen - are they any good?
  • Its not advertised, and I don't know if they have stopped doing it this year, but VM were at my freshers fair last year and were offering a 9 month contract. I didn't look into it as I am still in my Student house with housemates, so have a 12 month contract.
I will say, wait until after freshers to see about any other deals, but look at 12 month contracts if you think you will be their over the summer or living their next year(as you could haggle next years price down to make paying the extra couple months worth it)

Samknows only lists the biggies, there were literally 10's of ISP who listed monthly contracts.
Off top of my head https://www.adsl24.co.uk do various packages on a monthly basis.

    Thanks for that,

I know people that used to use virgin and had a nine month contract a few years back.

But a good tip to wait for a while - or argue the price down.

    cheers

Zen are very good but not cheap and have download limits. Many of us on mse use Zen. www.zen.co.uk

www.plusnet .co.uk also has month by month broadband plus other low 12 month contract and telephone packages.
