yes well highndsight is a wonderfull thing lets hope i get a satifactory outcome tomorrow. the point i am annoyed about is he was told to upgrade his account by santander so that he could get an overdraft . i'll go with him and see if they really are as bad as everyone seemd to be suggesting. he has learnt a lesson yes. but banks should not Prey on the young and get them into a spiraling debt situation in this way. so yea thanks all "a little knowledge goes far"0

ok i said i'd let you know how i got on so here goes. we went into his branch and the completely agreed with me that he had been missold the account . they have referred it to there complaints people who will contact him on monday. they also refunded £75 pounds of charges when i asked why they were allowing him to go overdrawn on a basic account , there line was "the amounts were so small that the system didnt pick them up" the bank manager was a little rude at times but we got a satisfactory outcome, well at least half we shall see what happens monday. thanks again for advice all.0

Indeed let us know how you get on on Monday.0

Sounds promising. Interesting how the system picked up the small amounts when it came to the £25 charges though
.
I read somewhere on here that branches can only refund so much in charges so hopefully complaints will do the rest.:beer:0 -
It probably is because the small amounts of £1.50 are below the floor limit in the canteen where he used the card. Therefore they are not checked on line and are in effect guaranteed payments and will be taken from the account.0

One thing has not been addressed here and that is the fact that your son is an adult.
It is responsbility to manage the account and when he tries to pay for something and there is not enougn money in his account that is treated as a request to go overdrawn.0 -
In the Basic Account T&Cs it does state:
Basic Current accounts do not offer overdraft facilities. Each time you ask us to make a payment and there isn’t enough money in your account to cover it, we will not pay it and we will charge you an Unpaid Item Fee of £25."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
There are two types of overdraft, arranged and unarranged. When you make a transaction which takes you over your arranged overdraft or available balance then this is seen by the banks as an attempt for a unarranged overdraft which they may grant at the time at higher interest rates.
They may still decide to decline it however, and return any payments that take you over your available balance. And charge you extortionate admin charges to tell you about something you're already aware of
This is standard with most banks I believe.0 -
i challenged abbey a few years ago in a similar situation on behalf of a vulnerable person. at this point there were no laptops or mobiles and paper statements were being sent to wrong address (bank's error).
when, like you, the bank agreed to refund some charges, i complained that if some were wrong and deemed to be refunded then so were all of them. we were then refunded everything.0 -
