NHS Regular user, mileage and tax

I'm a district nurse using my own car to visit patients. I get 0.3690 per mile plus a regular user monthly payment of £52.17.

My tax code has just changed to 725L from 729L, apparenlty because of 'taxable expenses payments' of £580 as per my P11D.

Am I correct in thinking that milage shouldn't be a taxable benefit if the mileage rate is less than 40p per mile.

Am I also correct in saying that the regular user payment doesn't count as an expense? (whats the difference if you are an essential user)

If I'm right on both counts I shouldn't be paying tax on the expenses I receive. Or have I got this completely wrong?

Its a bit galling to be paying extra tax for the privledge of using my own car to visit patients!!

many thanks

Your code number has only gone down by 4, which equates to £40 less tax free, so £8 tax, so that doesn't tie up with £580 of expenses.

I presume you get the 36.9ppm tax free? What about the £52.17 per month, is it tax free too?

What was on your copy of the P11D regarding expenses?

thanks for the reply. I was hoping that the 36.9ppm and the 52.17 would be tax free!

My P11d didn't give a breakdown of the expenses. Just the amount.

    Interesting...

I also work for the NHS and get a regular allowance of 0.44p and £63.33 per month.

Just got a letter saying my tax code has changed, I thought it was tax free...as I already paid tax... :o

For tax year 10/11 you were entitled to receive 40ppm tax free (if using your own car) for the first 10000 miles, then 25ppm.

This year 11/12 it is 45ppm for the first 10000 miles.

I presume you have to record mileage? So you can work out how much you are allowed tax free in total.

If you have been taxed on this then you can reclaim the tax.

Usually an allowance is paid with salary and taxed, mileage is paid as expenses and untaxed, but I don't know how the NHS do it.

So you need to establish that first.

Does the £580 represent what you were actually paid?

Mileage should be shown as such......

Mine doesn't look like that. Mines this:

    hmrc.gov.uk/ebu/p11dws6.pdf can't post links...

What I'm confused with is that my figure in 1C doesn't match that in 2D. any ideas?

    this one?

Yup that's the one, may be the same for the OP. I can't post links due to being a new member. :(

I think I've worked out why mine is high, if the tax free is 0.40p of course I gotta pay for the extra 0.4p as I was getting 0.44. But still confused by boxes 1A and 2D... I'll need to check to see what I have recorded to see what box is correct...

Sorry to hijack a thread... did a search and this came up! :)

That is only the working sheet, you should have received a proper P11D as well, see note at the top right of the one you got.

1A is an amount of money, 2D is the number of miles.

You mean the miles in 2D x your ppm does not come to the money in 1A?

Have you an entry in 1C as well?
