    Surely not on school uniform???

How can that possibly be right if school uniform is solely for kids and kids clothing doesn't carry VAT?

Once they get to certain sizes it is a case of hard luck!
Age 14 is the cut off point (well, I suppose kids did leave school at that age once upon a time!) and/or 64" tall for boys, 63" tall for girls.
Both my sons were over 72" tall by age 13 :o, we were paying VAT on clothes in primary school

    Details here: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000138&propertyType=document#P333_16647

I have some Timberland boots, size 6, which are kids' ones and they were about half the price of the adult ones... I suppose it varies from shop to shop, I bought mine online so I have no idea whether they had VAT charged or not but they look exactly the same as the adults' ones, no difference at all...

My 13 year old has smaller feet than his younger brother (see above post, age eleven, size eleven feet - 5'6" tall). 13 year old has special needs and is not yet 5' and has size 5 feet. He wears Timberlands as these are most suitable for his feet - he has hypermobile joints and several problems with the roll of his feet, his gait, etc. He also wears special insoles from the hospital. I paid VAT on his Timberlands, which cost £50 from Wyndsors. Having said that, they will probably last two years or so, as he isn't heavy on his shoes and his feet don't grow very fast. So quite good value really.

OP I feel your pain regarding childrens shoes as my oldest son has always had quite big feet and finding shoes that are hard wearing enough for school has proved quite problematic over the last year. We used to get his shoes from the childrens department in our local Russel and Bromley as they stock several companies that produce childrens shoes only and the junior ranges of more popular adult brands up to size 7 with a limited range of size 8 too. They were a godsend for me as the staff knew the brands where the sizes were bigger and so we made it through the majority of his time at primary school with properly fitted hard wearing and robust shoes. It may be worth having a look in your local one the next time your child needs shoes as it has saved me a fortune over the years as the shoes we bought were always priced as childrens shoes.

Are they the suede desert boot types or the leather ones? Mine are black leather and cost me £35.. like I say no idea whether VAT was charged or not.
