commuting and breakdown cover

My new job will mean commuting an 80 mile round trip 5 days a week. The car is brand new and I haven't had any problems with it so far. However some family members are suggesting that I get breakdown cover.

Do you think this is necessary considering it is a new car? I could do without the expense really and I don't have a clue which 'level' of cover I would need when taking into account the fact I will be commuting between cities and doing mainly motorway driving.

All advice much appreciated :D

Many new cars come with one or more years free breakdown cover anyway so in the first place check that.

Ultimately it is up to you. What would you do if your car broke down on your way to work? Realistically any form of breakdown cover is not going to get you into the office on time though a few would provide an alternative vehicle for a short while whilst yours is being repaired.

Thanks for the quick reply. The car didn't come with any breakdown cover as I don't actually own the car instead it is leased. I don't know what I would do if I broke down - I'm just hoping that doesn't happen haha. Might have a look and see if there are any good deals going then but I certainly can't afford it until I get paid.

I pay £12 a month for roadside, recovery and at home from AA. I got it through Quidco with £60 cashback. It covers two of us regardless of what car we're driving.

Martin Lewis makes 3 recommendations. Not just this one. (Different recommendations for different circumstances - one considerably cheaper than £38!!)

    Do you work for them?

If you have a package bank account it may also come with breakdown insurance.

If you did a basic RAC Personal Cover (so you can use it in any car you're in) it will cost you £38.50 (online price) for a years cover and if you also did it via Quidco you'd get £20 cashback.

So £18.50 for a year, which is a lot less than you'd have to pay if you had to be towed off the Motorway.

For the cost of 3 gallons of fuel it's a no brainer.

I have autoAid which I think is a cracking bargain.
Just beacuse you car is new doesn't stop you having a puncture etc.

Yes I think you should get cover.

So because off the top of my head I mention one of the MSE recommended breakdown services I get asked if I work for them.

    I despair.

Everyone seems to go for basic cover.

Am I wasting my money going for home start and relay? I didn't think I was as I've had to use both on more than one occasion in the last few years.

What happens if they can't fix it by the roadside or if it won't start in the morning?

    Genuine questions.
