Reliable Collections

Hi,
Can you just advise if i'm doing the right thing. I've set up a standing order to pay 2 accounts at £5 per month each but they've rang and said this is not accebtable, i need to pay £73 and the accounts will be passed on to a third party. Do i cancel the SO and wait to hear or carry on paying in the meantime. He just said it was my choice. Not sure what to do next

if thats all you can afford then pay that, dont let them bully you into paying more.
is this your only debts? are you doing a dmp or something else?

    Hello.

I use to work for Reliable Collections for 2 years and know lots about them and how they work. The main thing is dont fear them and dont let them bully you, the staff are under very strict targets however you can take full control over this!

Whats the name of the two accounts you have and what are the balances if you dont mind me asking.

    Cheers
    Chris

We' ve been on a dmp for 8 years with CCCS. and still looking at about the same time left. Just seems never ending. I know it's wrong and stupid but as its been such a long time, things have needed replacing and my daughter got married so built up some catalogue debts. I KNOW !! I'm also off work sick following an op for a good few months. CCCSadvised bankruptcy and we cancelled the DMP but are so scared and confused so thought we'd try and make minimum payments while we save the fees and get our heads round it all

That's what i said. Think i must be a bit down and weepy after op. Not dealing with anyone by phone's the best bet i think
  • absolutely don't phone them, do everything in writing then you have a paper trail, I think you'll find they are not nearly so quick to refuse payment on paper.

He said he'd rang in response to my letter and S/O offer to agree an amount but then just said they couldn't accept less than £73 so they'd pass it on

He's right, theres a small team that will deal with you in writing. Simply put what you can afford and they legally cannot refuse you. Explain that you have been to the CCCS and they advised bankruptcy and that you want to make a gesture payment each month.

I remember setting up plans on £2 a month for much higher balances.

That's their prerogative. It doesn't magically make you richer. If they need to pass it on, fine. Just keep paying the £5 until you're told otherwise - that way if they take it to court, you can demonstrate that you've paid what you can.
