Postman Stole Our Mail

Hi all
I would be grateful if anyone could give me any advice regarding how to claim compensation for stolen mail.
I have lost count of the number of times we haven't received mail over the past two years, everything from Birthday and Christmas cards to bank and credit card letters and everything in between.
Anyway, this week we got a letter from the post office saying that we have not recieved letters for the past two years. When I telephoned our local post office to find out what was going on we were told that our postman has been storing letters in his garage which amounted to over 30,000 items as well as disposing of thousands more. He has obviously been sacked and awaiting trial but over the past few days the PO have been delivering mail that he had stored.
I really can't believe this has happened, there are christmas and birthday cards (some opened) from 18 month ago and even a couple of letters asking me to go for job interviews (which I merely thought had been unsuccesful from over 1 year ago)
As far as asking the post office for compensation I really don't know where to start. I have phoned the post office help line and they just apologise and say that they are investigating but they are just delivering this stolen post with everything else.
I spoke to the postman yesterday and he says there is still loads to be delivered, and they are deliveing it around 3 times a day at the moment.
Sorry for rambling on about this but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not what sure advice you want, Since the postman was caught and there delivering the items.
They might give you some sort of compensation if you ask them.0 -
The problem may be that RM has a contract with the sender and not you ? You personally haven't paid RM therefore have suffered no loss?0

For stamped and metered items, 6 x 1st Class stamps at the first weight step if the item is delivered 3 working days or more after the due date where basic evidence is provided. If the sender is claiming they must apply within 3 months of posting. If the recipient is claiming they must apply within 1 month of receipt.

what compensation do you want?
junk mail?
more birthday cards?
a bank card?
have you been left out of pocket financially by a lazy postman or are you just wanting something for the sake of it?0 -
I think that the OP is mostly put out (and rightly so) at the fact that he/she had been invited to job interviews and therefore missed out on a potential job... therefore maybe hoping for some compensation. I wouldn't hold your breath on them doing much about it though

The fact that you were not the person sending the item (& therefore not the person contracting with Royal Mail) does mean this in not your average case.
However, I'm not sure what obligations RM have. The bottom line is that through the failure to deliver the items there is a possibility that the recipient may of had some loss due to the type and quantity of mail that has not been received (after all, if you don't receive something in the post that you know is coming then your first reaction is to start expending time & effort chasing said items).
First step might be to lodge a formal complaint with Royal Mail, just to get the ball rolling & to at least obtain a case reference. Additionally, I'm not sure if the Postal redress Service might be able to offer any further advice on whether or not you might expect anything? http://www.postrs.org.uk/ ... had never heard of them before, I must admit.
As they say, if you don't ask you don't get.
Oh and btw, RM website does say that EITHER the sender or the addressee can claim for loss of an item, but they can only pay out to one party.
Good luck catching up on everything your lost post has in store for you.0 -

There ya go! The senders won't know or care. Go get em!One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -
