If an item is faulty it doesn't matter if you do not have a receipt shop should replace or refund!
  • I work for Virgin and if a customer brings us a faulty item, we give cash/cc card refund if they have their receipt and if they done we offer an exchange or a gift card :) If an item is faulty you should at the very least be offered an exchange, with or without a receipt.

Because you used a gift card, you are more likely to get an exchange or a gift card since its not a cash value.
  • Thanks everyone. Took them back yesterday, the item was refunded no problem, got a different pair of straighteners that had a better review and they are fabby I am really chuffed.

Thanks everyone for your help :D

I think a lot of places ask for a receipt as actual proof that you bought the item there. I knew someone who once tried to take a faulty item back to a different shop because the refund would have been more than they paid from the original shop.

    Hi,

It is true that you don't need a receipt for a damaged product.

In the eyes of the law the only thing is that the retailer has to be happy that the product was purchased from them by you & within any guarantee periods offered (not bought cheap from local recycle centre / car boot sale / stolen / bought from a competitor / ebay / etc- believe me this does happen)

If you can quote a rough time of puchase they can search their records (also bear in mind that due to the quantity of transactions that they process they can probably only go back upto 6 months)

One of their branded carrier bags could also be used as a proof of purchase from them (a trick is to keep a stock of these of places were you regularly buy, if like me you aren't good at keeping receipts)

    Hope this helps

can I tag a quick question on the end of this one please

My son was given a camera for Christmas and it doesn't work at all. I'm just about certain that it came from Argos as I told the giver that this was the one he wanted. Gave her the code so all she had to do was go in and order it. She didn't keep the receipt and would have paid in cash as she doesn't use cards at all. Is there anyway of managing to get this replaced. My son is quite upset that one of his Christmas presents doesn't work. All I know was that it was bought in one of two stores and it was bought in December.

I thought about buying a replacement one and just swapping them over and getting a refund but none of the stores anywhere near me have them in stock and its not available for hime delivery. Any ideas please?
  • Take it to your local argos and explain this to them, im sure they can check to see if it was purchased from there, and im sure they would offer you an exchange :)
