The brackets I added are redundant - even without them the result of the calculation is 19. I added them to emphasise that the multiplication should be performed first. As previously stated, the accepted rules of arithmetic stipulate that muliplication is performed before addition or subtraction (BODMAS). Try entering 18 + 7 X 3 - 20 into the calculator function on your PC, and it gives the result of 19.
