I'd book a holiday home for 2 weeks and change the removals date/put it into storage for 2 weeks.

Ring them, doubt there woul dbe any problems, but the last thing you need if for them to turn up with the stuff and refuse to take it in. If theres a problem you need to know now, not when you have a van load of stuff and no where to put it.

I would be on to your builders.
I am a bulider and dont see why they couldn't get it supported by next Thursday. Earlier this year we took down two chimney stacks over 3 floors and supported the stack at 4th floor level and that took a week all in.
If all the work is basically done I would have thought a few hours to install the permanent support.

Definitely ring them first, last thing you want is for them to turn up, refuse to do the work then charge you for storage - am sure it will be fine though!

Is there access other than through the hallway?

Well, I've emailed the removal guys to let them know that the majority of the building work is done & that there may be a small possibility that there will be a metal pole in place. I've said that it is not structural, holding up only the bricks from the wall above (which is itself not structural). The pole is only a couple of inches from the wall & shouldn't be a hindrance to getting in an out of the house.

Keep your fingers crossed for me please !

Re: builders - they've actually been brilliant. They only started last Friday and in that time they removed a chimney, stack & breast, replastered & made all this good, replastered 2 double bedrooms & put up new skirting and coving. And that's after they had to wait for 2 days for the plumber to move some pipes around ! The need for supporting the bottom of the first floor wall only became obvious once they'd started to do the work (they had warned me it might be the case, so wasn't a surprise), but we're still waiting for our architect to give the go ahead on what's needed for the steel/support - and that might take us past the removal date

not really - there's no back door unfortunately. There is a side alley with a side door but that might be too tight a turn for our furniture.

There's actually more width to the hall now that we've taken the chimney out - even with the pole still being there. I'm just hoping that their HSE person doesn't ban them form setting foot on site now !

p.s. how is your house sale going?

I wish you well, but do be prepared for the removal company to say no. They didn't put the support up, they don't know how safe it is, they don't know if one of their blokes might accidentally wallop it with Auntie Mabel's cherished sideboard and bring the upstairs wall crashing down on the bloke, his mate and the sideboard.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

    :D very neatly put !

Well, I decided to email the company to let them know. After a couple of hours delay when I was convinced that they had escalated the matter up to senior management level where it was being discussed in great detail, I got the following, and I quote:

If the metal strut you mention is still in situ when the crew arrive I cannot forsee it being a problem if there is no compromise to the access of your effects into the property. Please just mention it to the driver, your team leader, when they arrive.

    And........unclench........:T
