slightly odd removal company question!

We've got a removal booked next Thursday with one of the big removal firms. Some building work has over run & we will in all probability have a support brace in the hallway.

Does anyone know what the policy is with these removal guys? Will they refuse to enter the property? This house has been a nightmare since we bought it, I'm at the end of my tether now & if we won't be able to get our furniture in I'm likely to just curl up into a ball and start rocking gently in the nearest corner.......:(

  • Could you call them and ask? Might save some hassle on the day, if they do turn up and refuse to enter!

At least you could be prepared, and maybe rope in some friends to help carry furniture into the house.

if you have a support brace in the hallway...................will they even be able to get your furniture in past it?

have you measured how much room you have or do you know for sure that its possible to get past it (assuming its in the middle of the hall)

My better nature is telling me to call them, but l am very worried that if I tell them in advance,it will give them the option to refuse!

We've had the chimney out which straddles the hall and lounge walls-the support is a few inches from the wall and it means that there's actually more width there than before. It does still mean however that they do have to move furniture past the small brace.

I'm so tired right now, physically and mentally exhausted and I really don't think I could cope if there wad an issue. We have no friends or family that can help,so we're on our own:(

Ok,apparantly the brace is not actually structural, more just remedial in as much as it is holding up a non supportimg wall upstairs. Its just stopping the bottom bricks of the upper floor falling down.hoping that makes a difference?

well, there is no point having them if they can't get furniture past the brace. Can you pop a window out to bypass the hallway? (they will have done it before just check they have the right tools with them...)

Ring them, you are already thinking the worst and wearing yourself out, at least you will know one way or another which will either be a relief or give you a chance to plan something else. Good luck.

Thanks casper, sorry, missed that. Well movers are used to getting things up odd stairs and in odd holes.. am sure they will be fine then!

thanks everyone. I know the "right" thing to do would be to call them but I'm struggling with the issue that if we DO call them, then if they say they won't deliver then we've effectively shot ourselves in the foot. I now know that the pole is not supporting the house itself - just the base of a non-supporting wall, stopping the bricks from falling down where the floor once was.

I'm really struggling with things at the moment. We have had a bathroom fitter on site for 5 weeks now & nothing is plumbed in still, the house is a building site, I'm worried about removal day & I'm coming down with a cold. I keep bursting into tears at the slightest thing (in laws dropped a box of chocolates at the front door & that left me blubbing for 10 minutes!), so I'm clearly not coping. I'm usually such a together and organised person, so this is really getting to me :(

I think you need to call the removal company to reduce the stress you are suffering. You could offer to tape some padding around so that it would cause no harm to your furniture or their workmen.

I'm sure they must be used to moving things into all sorts of strange situations and are likely to take it in their stride.

    Hope it all goes well.
