Orange emails lost

For the 2nd time this year, Orange have lost my e-mail account. Since around 25th July my e-mail account has been disconnected. When I phone the absolutely useless helpline they tell me a different story every time. From what I can gather the server for old freeserve e-mail accounts has gone wrong again!

They have told me that lots of people have this problem, but I can't believe that they have lost all the old freeserve e-mail addresses, and they don't have any idea when it will be up and running.

Wonder if anybody else is experiencing this problem? I know this means I should probably get a more reliable e-mail address, but after 10+ years with this account, the thought seem daunting.

See if you can set up your Orange e-mail (when it starts working again) to forward to Gmail (guide here: http://wongablog.co.uk/2007/02/13/gmail-workaround-for-orangefreeservewanadoo-customers-with-email-problems/ although its 4 years old and I only skimmed it so I can't guarantee its accuracy)

Every e-mail of importance reply to it saying "new e-mail address" and steadily over 6 months you'll use your Orange e-mail less and less.

Then, finally, switch to a decent ISP :)

Setting up a Gmail account takes 5 minutes.
A group advisory email to all your address book contacts takes another 5 minutes.
Then all you have to do is change any online accounts-maybe 5 minutes per account?
Why do people make this out to be so problematic? You only have to do it once, and then you have an ISP -independent address forever.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks very much for the advice qpop I will check out Gmail. Hopefully not as useless as Orange.

OP thanks for helping me with my first posting, you sure made a newby feel welcome to the site.
