Some Things To Keep In Mind If You're Switching/Signing Up For BB

If you're considering signing up for broadband or switching supplier. There is something that's worth keeping in mind.
There are a lot of changes going on at the moment in the way that BT and other companies are able to supply BB to you. LLU (local loop unbundling) allows companies to install their own equipment into BT exchanges. This should allow them to offer their own speeds rather than be restricted by BT equipment. This is how Bulldog can offer up to 4Mbs on some deals. Now BT is dragging it's heels on this at the moment, but the regulator is starting to get on their back. So we should see this happening a bit quicker in more exchanges.
Also (and this could be the major change). BT is just starting to experiment with ADSL 2. This could offer speeds of up to 24Mbs (depending on distance from the exchange). This is 48 times faster than a 512Kbs connection. This technology works, it is used a lot in Europe, and it's about time BT got round to trying this out.
What I would say is. If you are changing or signing up for a new supplier, consider whether you want to be tied into a minimum 12 month contract. A lot of suppliers now offer 1 month minimums. This would leave you free to change later in the year if your exchange starts to offer much faster speeds.
