Claiming refunds from thetrainline.com
Hi All,
I have bought advance tickets through thetrainline.com for travel on trans pennine express next Wednesday. TPX have planned strikes affecting them on that day but as yet cannot confirm whether our service will be running. If the journey is canceled am I entitled to a refund even though thetrainline.com state that advance tickets are non refundable.
Thanks,
Luke.

Thanks wealdroam. I have checked that page and even contacted TPX. Unfortunately they told me to contact thetrainline as I bought through them. I just want to know if I am entitled to the money back even though the site says advances are non refundable.0

If it is cancelled, yes.
What is the journey? There are few journeys that could not be made with alternative operators.0 -
As a side note, NEVER buy from the Trainline as you can buy the same ticket through any train operator without the booking fees.0

OP, you already have your answer, but on that page I linked to earlier it clearly said...What happens if I have a ticket booked for the strike day?
...if you choose not to travel at all then you will be entitled to a full refund for the affected journey. To claim your refund you will need to return the ticket to where it was purchased.0 -

Oh yeah cheers... well it gets worse anyway. I have spoken to thetrainline who inform me there is a £10 charge per person per journey for changing or cancelling. The ticket for 2 of us return came to £40. So there is absolutely no value in the refund.0 -
Their explanation is only right if you cancel the tickets.Oh yeah cheers... well it gets worse anyway. So there is absolutely no value in the refund.
If the specific train that your tickets are for is not run, then of course they must refund you in full.
It may be difficult to confirm that the train hasn't run until after the event... strikes do sometimes get called off.0 -
Don't try to cancel the ticket, the charge applies if you cancel it. If the train is cancelled by the operator then a refund most certainly is payable to you. At this stage we do not yet know for certain the train is cancelled.Oh yeah cheers... well it gets worse anyway. What is the journey; we may be able to assist?0 -
If your trains are cancelled, I would cut thetrainline.com out of the loop and send your tickets with a covering letter direct to First Transpennine for a refund. Over last Christmas when Arriva Trains Wales(ATW) was effect by strike action I sent my Advance tickets, which I bought from the East Coast website, direct to ATW and within 10 days got a refund.Whoa! Thanks for the advice everyone - the journey is Heaton Chapel (Stockport) to Ravenglass (in Cumbria) with Manchester Piccadilly to Barrow in Furness being the TPX leg of the journey. The connections are Northern Rail0
