I have been looking around for cheap washing powder as only like to pay approx 10p per wash & came across an eco friendly way of washing clothes which actually saves money as well!
Soap nuts are a completely natural product so softens the clothes as well so no need for fabric softener ( just add a few drops of your favourite essential perfume oil to the wash ) so it saves money on fabric conditioner as well!!
A 1kg bag costs approx £10 and DOES approx 160-240 WASHES
AND if you do a low temp wash you can RE-USE them on a second wash the same day saving you even more money
I worked out because I only do approx 2-3 loads a week the £10 bag will last me well over 1 YEAR!!! :j
Will give them a go and let you know how I get on but seem to have very good reviews on the product & I like the fact it is a 100% natural product too...
Plus on their Facebook page there is a 10% off code
See ; http://www.salveo.co.uk/health/eco/soapnuts.asp for the soap nuts , with free delivery
And ; http://www.facebook.com/pages/Salveo-Wellness/246806165679 for the 10% off code which still works at the moment
I know natural products aren't for everyone but alot of people who have tried them say they will never go back to detergents again & I like the fact that you can compost them afterwards ... Might be a completely new habit for me
If I have a very soiled wash will add some cheap oxy stain remover to it and hope it does the trick!!
( I have tried the eco limescale toilet disks to save money on toilet bowl limescale removers & TBH they did not completely remove all limescale deposits but have cut them down!! )
I still think this may be the way forward for some people who like to save money and the enviroment

And what of the soapnut forests? Are they dieing out 'cos every eco-fighter is stealing all their nuts?! (just kidding, mainly, for an eco-company i presume they must be looking after the sustainability of the trees in question)0

I think they sound a brilliant idea by the way, and kind of fun! Nuts in the washing machine? Whoulda thunk it! I wonder if they're quite powerful enough to combat noxious man socks, though... Hmm. Please report back to us all with results when you've tried them out! x0

I have just bought some with the lavendar essence to try out. I do at least 2 loads a day so this will save me a fortune, thanks! My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and it's price competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.0

Will be interesting to see how you get on with them.0

I used these a few years ago but reverted back to regular detergent because they don't work well on whites, it fact the bag that they are kept in during the wash went brown!0

if you want a sample then you can buy one here:

all they ask is for p&p costs; which is 75p. worth a go for anyone who's interested?:grouphug:Official MSE canny forumite and HUKD VIP badge member

I would not reccommend them. Tried them last year and found they did not clean my washing and soon gave up. A few friends tried them and found them useless so don't waste your money.0

Loads of positive feedback in the soap nuts thread linked to in post #7 above. I definitely think they are worth trying and making your own judgement about.0
