Thank you for the posts: Candygirl that made me chuckle.. there are some real characters on the canal they are a friendly lot and would help you out at a drop of a hat,... We have some tales to tell of strange people and they arent usually the boaters... The other day someone popped their head over the side of the boat to ask us... could they use the loo if we have one on board.... mmmm no this is my house lol:) Some horses got loose and a passer by glared at my husband and I ... Then said can you not tether your horses up.... no they are not ours ... oh dont they pull the boat..... No she has an engine to do that .. I know shes bloody old but shes not that old :)

Hello bast & welcome to the wonderful world of DFW.

I'm a former boatie myself :D & have a simmering desire to return to that lifestyle again one day. Yes it can be tough, but there is also something very 'whole' about living in a mindful & simple way. I used to love scavenging & collecting wood for the burner ... hated doing the toilet run though _pale_.

I love that you want to see your children enjoy what you've achieved now, rather than leave it all behind you.

As far as dealing with the debt is concerned, are you aware of the wonders of quidco ? I'm sorry to hear that your husband has suffered with work & hope that your new lifestyle is helping to heal him. Completing surveys is a good way to earn a bit extra. Some places pay in vouchers & a few pay cash.

I'll float by again some time if you don't mind :)

    Good luck
    Lula

Horrific story in the Mail! What goes on that we never hear about?

There's heart-breaking pictures in the Irish papers today of a beached sperm whale that will die in the next couple of days - in one picture a little girl is pouring sea water from a beaker over it to try to make it feel better - really brings tears to the eyes.

Hmm, poor you about the overflowing toilet. Had you had experience of narrow boats before living on one, or was it all completely new to you? I'd love to hear more about the nuts and bolts of living on a boat.
    "Green pastures are before me,
Which yet I have not seen;"
I'd love to be a good example - instead, I am a horrible warning.
  • Wow - you live on a narrowboat. That must be incredible, being able to go where the mood takes you at a very civilised, slow pace. What is it with modern life that we need to do everything harder and faster, make more money, spend more money, and never take that moment to stand and stare?

Thanks for posting the lovely poem and good luck with your new life.
