Using Mobile in Australia
Options
Hi
Wonder if anyone can help? My son is going to Australia in October for approx 12 months. He currently has an I Phone contract with 02 which is due to expire in Feb12. Can anyone advise whether he should upgrade before he goes or wait and buy a phone in Australia, leaving me his I phone. I am getting lots of conflicting advice about this. I also need to upgrade my phone before he goes. We also want to be able to skype one another and someone has told me that the 3 network gives free skype calls.
Any advice would be appreciated (as you can probably gather I am not very techie minded!!):o

Buy one there, if he upgrades here he'll be committed to at least 12 month contract to get a new phone. Even if he takes just the phone someone has got to pay the contract for 12 months, If he takes the sim to use in the phone the romaing rates will be astronmiical if used for 12 months.
Three did do some skype to skype but it would only be free for you to call onto the skype network he may have to pay at the other end, a far better solution is a PC USB phoneor a web cam at each end.0 -
Why not just take his phone and leave you the sim, iphone is expensive in Oz like min of A£60 amonth for 2 years. Best to get payg say with Vodafone and only use wifi for skype etc. so no data charge.0

My daughter lives in Oz and works all over. She went with Vodafone Australia. She works in a different city most weekends and it seems to be ok.
It is a lot cheaper than using a UK phone over there.
Get him a smartphone and install WhatsAPP or similar so you can message each other for free.0 -

Good idea, also for voice push to talk try heytell.0 -
your son should ask O2 to unlock his iphone before he goes (it's free) and transfer his phone number (assuming he wants to keep the same number during the time while he's away travelling) to a uk pay as you go sim. then he should get a new sim in australia, either a 1y contract or a pay as you go one with a decent data allowance which he can use in the iphone and you can both skype away to your hearts content0
