I'm interested in the debate about tutoring.
My eldest is going into P6 next year so the transfer test is blipping on the radar. I will get her tutored, whether by doing it myself or by paying someone. I do think it helps as I'm a teacher and a tutor (both post-primary, tutoring mainly for A-level) and I've seen how pupils can pull up their scores with tutoring.
I think a good tutor can give a child confidence and I don't mean by lying to them about their ability. You get them to complete tasks they thought were beyond them and that encourages them. I tutored one child for the 11-plus (gratis for a friend) and he had an issue with trying to use what he'd seen on tv to answer the comprehension questions. It had a major impact on his scores but was quite easy to fix. A teacher wouldn't necessarily have picked up on that or had the time to work through it. It's not the teachers fault - even when you patrol the room looking over shoulders, you can see the problem but not what's causing it.
Anyway, good luck to you all. I wonder does there ever come a point with children when you breathe a sigh of relief and think 'job done'.

  • I heisted to write this because I know how easy it is for people to interpret your words but I solely write this to reassure the person I was 12 months ago.

My daughter is not difficult but definitely challenging. She has her own mind and is certainly not afraid to express herself. Going through school tests/ corrections was a battle – she hated it and we hated going though it with her

Fairly late in the process we got a tutor. She loved going to the tutor but all she seemed to talk about was hair and holidays and whenever we asked the tutor how things were going she would say – absolutely fine. This did nothing to stop us worrying about her future.

The school was having twice weekly tests and whilst most people were fairly consistent our daughter was ranging dramatically to marks that would be well on either side of the 100 average.

We were undoubtedly frustrated and certainly fell out on numerous occasions. We eventually reached a point where we decided that we (as parents) couldn’t do anymore and decided to just support her and just hope she would do her best. This sounds so easy in retrospect but it felt more like giving up at the time.

Fast forward to the night prior to the first exam and a different daughter appeared: One that wanted to go to bed early, eat fruit and ensure she had a good breakfast etc.

Cut to even later in the process and the results. Unbelievably she did brilliantly well – well over what we had hoped/dreamed and surpassing anything she had ever achieved in class.

Moral of the story: Some children don’t need or want to be pushed. Only one test matters and some children know that and just don’t see the point in superfluous testing.

Was the tutor needed – No. Am I glad she had one – Yes. The tutor saw through the poor results in school and I am convinced if we had been tutoring her it would have driven the whole family mad

    Hope that helps someone.
