Taking hire car out of the uk to Eire then back again

My husband needs to hire a car from the UK to take his parents over to ireland for a quick family visit - is it possible to take a car out of the UK into the republic and then back again (returning to where the car was hired). Do we need to inform the car hire company or pay for extra insurance?

The only way to know for sure is to check with whatever company you plan to rent from. I know Hertz charge, but others may have different policies.0

It is certainly possible but be prepared for extra charges:
Europcar, for example, charge an extra £40 for up to two days and £50 for three to five days:
