My husband got £60 of euros on Monday. He paid with his Visa Debit. He noticed today that they have also charged him £1.99 handling charge.
Is this normal practice and if so, why wasnt he told that he'd be charged.

Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

They or the bank have charged him ? It's pretty standard practice for banks to charge a fee when buying currency using a debit card.0

He phoned Santander and they said it was Thomas Cook who have made the charge not the bankLoved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0

Was it on the receipt from Thomas Cook?
If it is, its their charge. if its not, Its Santander. My bet is it is the bank.0 -

There would normally be a notice displayed in branch to the effect that banks may apply a handling charge to the transaction. Not all banks do, and Thos Cook can't be expected to know who does and who doesn't.
Santander DO charge on some of their cards.
Santander customer service don't know what they are talking about. Nothing new there then.0 -

My bet is it has been put through by Thomas Cook as a 'manual cash advance'. According to the T+C's of your account there is a £1.99 charge from the bank for this type of transaction. Therefore they are perfectly entitled to charge you it.
It is a charge from the bank, unfortunately the advisor you spoke to has got it wrong!0 -
A lot of banks do it. And it is in the terms and conditions of the account/card. It is because foreign currency transactions are treated as a cash advance.0
