So, spike7451, you are suggesting they will relocate the master socket as part of the service?

    Also,

1] Your post seems to indicate you work as one of BT's install engineers?

2] I was under the impression that moving the master socket was a big job? i.e. having to redirect the external wiring (from a telephone pole in the street) to a new point outside the house, drilling a hole in the wall, and making the necessary adjustments on the inside of the house too? I'm no telephone engineer so my understanding may well be wrong...

3] How viable is it to run an extension cable from the existing master socket to a further location, lets say upstairs bedroom, and using that extension as the 'master' where the modem will be connected? Any loss of data/quality?

They may move the master socket if it is the old LJU or the entry point for the drop cable is nearer to a electric outlet,it depends on the engineer.
The junction box that is used to change from internal to external is called a 77A & the size of a matchbox. These have replaced the old 'coffin boxes' in old installations. You normally find these near where the cable comes into the house. (cloakroom, porch ect)

Relocating a master socket can be easy or hard depending on the wiring layout. They don't have to run new cable from the pole, all they have to do is mount a 77A where the cable comes in, (if the isn't one there already) or replace the coffin box with a 77A, and run new internal cable to the site of the new socket.Or they can connect new cable into a blank faceplate on the NTE5 & run from that, which effectivly makes the NTE5 a junction box.

As to your third question,I don't know as I have no experience with BT Infinity,I do know that extension cables in a DSL broadband set up can cause problems, especially if it's a cheap aluminium cored extension.

I don't work for BT,rather I started as a Installer for NTL back in 98 before becoming a Service (faults) Engineer. After redundency in the latter 2000's,I went to work for Sky as an Installer before moving to Sky's Broadband side of things, where I dealt a lot with BT on a daily basis.(exchange faults ect)
I'm now not working having being diagnosed with a dodgy heart in April this year.

    Thanks very much!

  • By the way, in my case the incoming cabling is underground, there being a length of cable on the outside wall to a junction box next door which then goes underground to a manhole in the pavement. The 77A box is just inside the door at the top feeding the master socket down below it. It would be pretty easy for him to change my upstairs extension socket to become the master and reroute/replace the existing internal cabling - right next to the computer in fact.

All he needs to do is swap them around & backwire the ringer to the new extension.Ten minute job.
  • Sorry spike, we are not allowed to backfeed in any way, it has to be a new cable to link up with existing sockets !
