If I was in your situation I would simply apply for a select account online. If you are already a customer with online banking there is a shortened application process.
When you get the new account close the basic one or keep it open if you wish.

Well i just did this, took less then 5 mins and got the select account with cheque book, account number and sort code etc.

Perhaps this is actually a fair move. Unlimited free banking is only possible while it is being subsidised from other fees, charges etc. If we were all prepared to cover the costs of our own banking needs there wouldn't be such a number of 'unfair' banking practices, such as ppi.

RBS are also the focus of a campaign as they invest in companies that manufacture cluster bombs. nice work for a 85% state owned company, which same state is signed up to a conventio to outlaw them

I don't see what the problem is. Indeed, with the FSA an the Govt against cross subsidy in financial services, the move is quite logical as its effectively other banking customers that are paying for it.

I can understand those people with basic accounts not being happy with it but face the fact. You have a basic account. If you want full banking facilities then dont have a basic account.

I know the basic account is aimed at those with poor credit scores but I'm afraid that the service and products you get reflect what you are willing to pay for them. Also, why shouldn't there be consequences of having a poor credit scores? You earn the right to build up a good credit history.

It says they can use Tesco ATM's - that will cover a lot of towns.

What about cashback? Can they still do cashback at supermarkets etc if they are purchasing?

Perhaps we should have let just 1 bank fail.

Private profits and nationalised debt. with all thats recently gone on, does no MP wish to stand up and be heard about this? Where were the voices saying "Jeez, we've got a huge under class problem that's going to burst, perhaps we should invest a bit more in our society". not 1 voice was heard arguing for investment and funding for our falling down schools, poor rail industry, lack of a full time paid fire brigade or coastguard service. Nope, just lots of noise when the banks fell under their own greed.

Why not boycot just one bank all together?
