For the coffin dodgers who don't use the internet, ATM's, electricity etc, Santander have a leaflet next to the new chip & pin machines in branches.
I say the above because the contents of the leaflet are not on Santander's Website .

Can anyone forumites tell me:

What's the cash withdrawal limit over the counter using chip & pin as ID?
Is chip & pin required for cash deposits of £0.00 and above or does it start higher ?

I also noticed this when I was in my local branch today, the new chip&pin terminals had already been installed but where inactive.

The branch staff informed me that once they have completed the roll out, that every transaction completed at the counter will need to be authorised by chip&pin, something was mentioned about enhanced security and faster more efficient processing. On a sideline to this it also looks like the are going to be getting rid of paper receipts.

Would also be interested in hearing more about how this new procedure will work?!

Chip and pin is being introduced for most counter transactions such as deposit and withdrawals, setting up standing orders, transfer etc.

It is like with Natwest for example, you put your card in and enter your pin to authorise the transaction.

Passbooks will use an electronic signature.

You can opt out of the chip and pin, but you will need to produce ID in addition to your card

Paper receipts will also be made optional.

I guess making the counter experience as much like an ATM as possible is one way of encouraging people to use the ATM.
  • Thanks for the info ses6jwg, do you know when these changes are due to take effect?
  • The changes will take effect once the roll-out is complete (expected fully over the coming weeks as it has to be done in stages).

The counter cash limit - to my knowledge - will be upped to £1,000 if you know your pin number (and not everyone does sadly). I've seen it in full action and it's pretty slick as everything is on the device's screen for the customer before they confirm any transaction.

It'll also make CHAPS, Telegraphic Transfers and International payments easier with higher limits and less paperwork checks for staff (HOORAY! :j :D ).

There's still some teething problems to iron out before a full launch can handle (you wouldn't believe how much work goes into launching something like chip and pin devices into 1300+ branches), but it'll make life much easier for everyone once it's all up and running. :D

What do you mean that passbook customers will have electronic signatures - do you mean just the UV-light type that are already used, or some kind of electronic pad? I'd imagine Halifax (the other major bank with chip & pin who have large numbers of passbook customers) would be watching with interest.

Electronic pad. The screen above the chip and pin device is a screen that displays text as well as presenting you with a box that is signed with a pen attached to said device. This then appears on the cashiers screen and this can be checked against the signature on the passbook.

Yep, but I've also got wind of other similar plans (that I can't divulge unfortunately :( ) that'll make a Personal Banking Advisor's life a LOT easier when it comes to ID/AML (anti-money laundering).

I doubt the devices will make it to a PBA's desk until the counters are all up and running smoothly... ;)

All good ideas.... just years behind NatWest and other proper banks. Santander is always late for the party, usually bringing its appalling brand of customer service with it :(
